I keep thinking less about what FedRateWatch shows and more about what it costs to trust. A rate oracle can report a number. An expectation oracle reports a convention: how futures liquidity, basis, and methodology are translated into probability. That distinction matters.
Most people focus on speed. I focus on liability. If a protocol liquidates because the feed lags or leads, who absorbs the loss? The token can align publishers through staking and slashing, but you cannot slash a probability for being wrong. You can only slash deviation from an agreed method. So trust shifts to governance.
That is the hidden tradeoff: freshness versus verifiability. Faster updates invite front-running; slower updates invite cascades. Neither is fixed by better cryptography.
Long term, the value is not the narrative. It is whether lending markets and RWA treasuries can integrate the feed without adding a new systemic risk. If existing oracle networks absorb rate expectations as another feed, the token may not capture the value.
My open question: does DeFi need a dedicated expectation oracle, or just a better liability model for uncertain data? I am watching execution, not narrative. I want to see real adoption. That is the signal I track today.
