The parliament in Latvia has officially passed a new cryptocurrency taxation framework that introduces some practical updates for its residents. Beginning in the year 2027, citizens will be allowed to use cryptocurrency to settle their personal tax obligations. The updated rules also change how these digital assets are assessed, meaning individuals will now only face tax liabilities on the profits that go beyond their original deposit principal. Additionally, for cryptocurrency held during the year 2026, the legislation provides a special, one-time option for residents to report their asset valuations at a rate of 10%.

All of these progressive regulatory updates leave us wondering: when will Nigeria adopt a similar approach?
