$ETH The Upgrade: In 2025,
$ETH Ethereum launched a technical update (called EIP-7702). It was supposed to be a good thing, making normal, everyday crypto wallets smarter by letting them temporarily act like advanced "smart contracts" to perform helpful tasks. [1]
The Trap: The attacker created a malicious piece of code (a "sweeper" contract) designed to empty out funds. [1]
The Signatures: The attacker managed to get 50 valid digital signatures directly from one of Binance's main active wallets (known as a "hot wallet"). Because Binance processes thousands of transactions a second, the attacker created 50 different variations to make sure at least one would perfectly match Binance's rapid transaction counter. [1, 2]
The Drain: When one of those signatures went through, the new
$ETH Ethereum upgrade kicked in. It essentially told the network: "Give this malicious code temporary permission to control the Binance wallet." Within minutes, the wallet was cleaned out. [1, 2, 3]
