Strategy Buys $27M in Bitcoin at $123K Just Before Major Crypto Crash
Strategy (MSTR) — the world’s largest corporate holder of $BTC — made headlines this week after purchasing 220 BTC worth $27.3 million right before the market’s sudden plunge.
According to the company’s official press release on Monday, Strategy acquired the Bitcoin at an average price of $123,561 using funds raised through the sale of its preferred stock series (STRF, STRK, STRD).
However, the timing couldn’t have been worse. Only days after the purchase, Bitcoin prices dropped sharply from over $123,000 on Thursday to nearly $103,000 by late Friday, marking one of the largest flash crashes in crypto history. The sell-off wiped out more than $19 billion in leveraged positions, shaking investor confidence across the market.
The crash followed rising global tension, as reports surfaced of Trump’s proposed 100% tariff hike on Chinese goods, sparking renewed fears of a U.S.–China trade war.
At the lowest point of the dip, BTC traded 16% below Strategy’s average entry price. Even after a weekend rebound, Bitcoin hovered between $110,000 and $115,000, suggesting the company could have saved nearly 7–10% had it waited a few more days.
Despite the short-term setback, Strategy’s total Bitcoin holdings now stand at 640,250 BTC, accumulated at an average cost of $73,000 since launching its BTC treasury strategy in 2020.
Meanwhile, MSTR stock saw a 2.5% rise on Monday, indicating investor confidence in the firm’s long-term crypto vision despite near-term volatility.
