The Zcash Ironwood upgrade is confirmed to activate on July 28, 2026, at block height 3,428,143 (approx. 8:00 AM EST). This is a direct response to a critical "counterfeiting" vulnerability discovered in the Orchard shielded pool.
🔬 The "Infinity" Vulnerability
On May 29, 2026, security researcher Taylor Hornby discovered an under-constrained element in the Orchard circuit while using AI-assisted auditing tools. The bug existed since Orchard's launch in May 2022 and could have allowed an attacker to create unlimited, undetectable counterfeit $ZEC . Hornby confirmed the exploit worked in a local test environment.
⚠️ The Trust Problem
Zcash fixed the bug via an emergency NU6.2 hard fork on June 2, but the privacy architecture means there is no cryptographic way to prove the bug was never exploited during those four years. This created a crisis of confidence. ZEC lost over 50% of its value in two days, Arthur Hayes sold his entire bag, and Cypherpunk Technologies (CYPH) stock fell 37%.
🛡️ How Ironwood Fixes This
Ironwood replaces the Orchard pool with a new, verifiable shielded pool using a "Turnstile" accounting mechanism.
· Migration: The old Orchard pool will be frozen to new activity. All funds leaving Orchard must pass through an accounting checkpoint.
· Verification: This forces all exiting $ZEC to be counted, allowing the network to mathematically prove that no excess counterfeit coins exist in circulation.
· User Action: Wallets will provide a one-click migration tool, and you keep the same receiving address.
