#ÉCONOMIE | Iranian money has just hit a new all-time low against the dollar.
➡️ In the free market, 1 US dollar is now exchanged for more than 2.2 million Iranian rials, according to two exchange-rate tracking sites cited by Reuters.
The slide is accelerating: the rial has lost about 10% of its value in just one week.
📉 Over a year, it’s even more striking: the Iranian currency has lost about half of its value.
Several factors are driving this collapse.
👉 Tighter US sanctions are weighing heavily on the Iranian economy and its access to foreign currency.
👉 Added to that are the economic consequences of the conflict and of US and Israeli strikes, which have resumed and are increasing uncertainty around the country.
💰 For Iranians, the collapse of the rial is far from only a figure on the markets.
A currency that depreciates means more expensive imports, greater pressure on prices, and a loss of purchasing power for the population.
➡️ And the year-on-year comparison captures the scale of the shift: if the rial has indeed lost about half of its value versus the dollar, you now need almost twice as many rials as a year ago to buy the same amount of dollars.
Between sanctions, war, and economic difficulties, the Iranian currency is becoming one of the most visible symbols of the pressure being placed on the country’s economy.
💬 How much further can the Iranian rial fall?
