The history of Halloween is a rich tapestry woven from ancient Celtic rituals, Roman festivals, and Christian traditions.

1. The Ancient Celtic Festival of Samhain
The primary root of Halloween is the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced "sah-win"). Celebrated over 2,000 years ago in the regions that are now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter—the "darker half" of the year.
The Celts celebrated Samhain on October 31st. This date held special significance because they believed it was a time when the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead became blurred. They thought that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth on this night.
To commemorate the event, Celtic priests, known as Druids, would build huge sacred bonfires. People would gather to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, they wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins. These costumes served two purposes:
To disguise themselves from the spirits, hoping to blend in and avoid being harmed.To frighten away malevolent spirits.
2. Roman and Christian Influence
After the Roman Empire conquered most of the Celtic territory by 43 A.D., two Roman festivals were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain:
Feralia: A day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead.Pomona: A festival honoring the Roman goddess of fruit and trees, whose symbol is the apple. This likely explains the tradition of "bobbing for apples" that is still practiced at Halloween parties today.
By the 9th century, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In an effort to replace the pagan Celtic festival with a church-sanctioned holiday, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints' Day, a time to honor all saints and martyrs. The evening before All Saints' Day was known as All Hallows' Eve ("Hallow" being an old word for "saint" or "holy person"). Over time, "All Hallows' Eve" was contracted into the name we use today: Halloween.
Even with the new Christian holiday, many of the old Samhain traditions, such as bonfires, costumes, and a focus on spirits, remained.
