Why the Agent Economy Needs a Payment Layer Built from First Principles..

AI agents can already reason, plan, and execute multi-step tasks. What they still cannot do safely is pay.

That single missing piece is the real bottleneck of the agent economy. Without verifiable identity, clear delegated authority, and programmable spending limits, every payment either requires a human click or becomes an unacceptable risk.

Kite approaches this problem from first principles. Instead of bolting payments onto existing human-centric rails, it builds infrastructure where agents are treated as first-class economic actors.

At the core is the three-layer identity model inside Kite Agent Passport:
User holds root authority. The private keys never leave the user’s control.
Agent receives a deterministic on-chain identity derived from the user’s wallet. It can act, but only within the boundaries the user has cryptographically signed.

Session is ephemeral. A short-lived key scoped to a specific budget, time window, and set of allowed actions. When the session ends, the authority disappears.
This design means a compromised session key affects only one task. A compromised agent remains bounded by the rules the user set. The user’s root key stays protected.

Payments settle in stablecoins on a purpose-built L1 optimized for high-frequency, low-value agent transactions. Spending rules are enforced on-chain, not by trust. Every action leaves an auditable trail that links the payment back to the human who authorized it.
The result is something practical: you can give an agent a budget, let it discover services, negotiate, and pay while staying in control the entire time.

The agent economy will not scale on better models alone. It needs infrastructure that makes autonomy safe. That is the problem Kite is solving.

I find Covenants interesting because they approach a problem that often gets overlooked in crypto, which is deciding when information should become available.

The idea is to keep certain instructions or data encrypted until a defined condition is met. Rather than revealing everything. upfront, the process uses encryption and a network of nodes to support controlled access when the required condition is satisfied.

What matters here is how this could change the way applications handle sensitive information. Imagine a bidding process where details should remain hidden until the right moment. Keeping that information sealed could help reduce the advantage someone might gain by seeing it too early.

I think this is a meaningful direction for @Nillion because privacy is not only about hiding data. It is also about controlling when that data becomes accessible and under what conditions.

Of course, the real challenge is making these systems secure and reliable in practice. The conditions must be enforced correctly, the network must work as intended, and developers need to understand the security assumptions before building applications around them.

For me, the interesting question is how far this approach can go beyond theory and become useful in real applications.
