I checked Babylon’s BTCVault testnet explorer today, and the number that stuck with me wasn’t TVL. It was utilization: 4.43 sBTC deposited, roughly $305K, but only 24.48% actually borrowed—about $74.8K. That gap feels more honest than the “unlock Bitcoin” narrative.

The vault side is moving. There are 249 active vaults out of 1.88K total, and deposits keep showing up. But borrowers are still testing tiny positions—$38 USDC here, $14 USDT there, even a $10.85 WBTC borrow. I caught myself reading the deposit number as demand. It isn’t. Available liquidity and actual risk appetite are two different things.

Babylon removes the obvious bridge-and-custody problem, which matters, but the next friction is behavioral. Bitcoin holders seem comfortable locking BTC for yield; they’re much less comfortable treating it like working collateral. The infrastructure can be ready while users still hover over the borrow button…
