Everyone’s focused on the rate hike itself. I think the more interesting number is the vote.
A 25bp move to 3.75%-4.00% is already basically priced in, with markets putting the odds around 91%. That’s not where the surprise is.
What I’m watching is how the Fed actually gets there.
Back in July, the hold was 9-3, with Hammack, Kashkari and Logan dissenting for a hike. So tonight’s split should tell us a lot. A near-unanimous vote would look like the start of a real shift. More dissent would make it feel more like a reluctant one-off.
And there’s another wrinkle: even after a hike, real rates don’t exactly scream “tight money” if inflation is still hanging around. That’s part of why BTC has basically gone nowhere for the last few weeks — roughly $76K-$80K while volatility has dropped to a one-month low.
My own watchlist:
BTC: probably choppy into the decision. I care more about the vote and 2027 dots than the 25bp itself.
Tech: vulnerable. Higher-for-longer is a tough backdrop for long-duration AI valuations.
Gold: still interesting to me. If real rates stay relatively suppressed, the broader thesis doesn’t disappear just because the Fed hikes.
Personally, I’m not looking to force a trade before the print. I’d rather see the vote count and the dots first.
Curious what everyone else is doing here BTC, tech, gold, or sitting this one out?
