A closer look at WAC Lab and the work they’ve been doing with Season 3 cohorts to bring sensible implementations of blockchain technology to cultural institutions.

WAC Lab has been running consecutively for almost three years, tracing its roots back to December 2021. During that period, they have onboarded thousands of art professionals and dozens of cultural institutions to blockchain.

This has been accomplished through WAC Lab’s unique program, which teaches cultural institutions the basics of blockchain and provides hands-on support for projects and mentors. This latest season has been no short of a stellar turnout, with over eight hundred art professionals participating in weekly discussions and twenty-four museums participating in WAC Lab’s training programs.

Let’s highlight more of WAC Lab and some of the projects unveiled at their upcoming demo day on May 30th!

What Goes Into The WAC Lab Programs?

Museums today face several hurdles, such as attracting younger, tech-savvy audiences, securing financial support, and remaining relevant in an increasingly digital world. Web3 offers a compelling solution to these issues by integrating blockchain technology, generative AI, and immersive digital environments. This new framework can reshape how museums engage with their visitors, creating captivating and interactive experiences that appeal to a wide range of people.

WAC Lab’s free programs provide education, resources, and mentoring to help institutions understand and apply blockchain technology. In an area still relatively under-explored by the traditional art world, these resources are crucial for starting a journey into the blockchain and web3 space.

Some of the programs organized by WAC Lab are as follows.

WAC Weekly: An online discussion forum for knowledge exchange on Web3 and the arts. This program is open to all art and culture institutions without restrictions.

WAC Museums: A six-week educational and mentoring program focusing on blockchain and Web3 technologies for arts and culture institutions.

WAC Factory: A four-week accelerator program for developing Web3 projects in collaboration with Web3 tech integrators.

WAC Resources: This is a compilation of information and tools to help start a Web3 journey in the arts. A great example is their third handbook, which is available for viewing or downloading here.

By offering free access to education, resources, and mentoring, WAC Lab empowers museums and cultural institutions to embrace innovative solutions that enhance visitor engagement, create new revenue streams, and ensure their relevance in the digital age. WAC Lab’s impact has been more than evident in the success stories emerging from its cohorts, which we have covered in length.

Each of these projects will utilize live minting, experimenting with different types of art and audience engagements. Per a press release, here’s a little more information on how each project is utilizing Tezos.

Museo de Arte Popular José Hernández (Argentina), in collaboration with HASHTAG and supported by fxhash and KERU, is integrating an AI-generated poem performance inspired by the famous Argentinian poem ‘Martín Fierro’ with a unique NFT souvenir that will be minted as a gift during The Night of The Museums in November 2024.

The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico), supported by fxhash and KERU, is planning a live minting experience with the artist Gisela Colón for their 25th anniversary, featuring generative art and interactive displays.

The Royal Danish Collection (Denmark), in collaboration with the artist Martine Jarlgaard and supported by creative coder Aldrovanda, presents the art piece “Minimum Viable Human Nature.” Reviving a unique collection of historical royal porcelain and botanical prints through interactive generative mechanisms and NFTs, the installation will offer visitors a personalized digital experience.

XR HUB Bavaria (Germany), supported by objkt.com and KERU, uses blockchain technology to reify virtual creations and create a personalized digital souvenir with Deutsches Museum in Munich.

Goethe Institut Lisbon (Portugal), supported by Nimi, aims to set up a token-based membership system using proof-of-attendance tokens, offering benefits to members and exploring the potential of DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations).

Museum Ulm (Germany), in collaboration with NRW-Forum/Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and supported by Nimi, is building the foundation of the future operational DAO for the nexmuseum.io platform starting with a token-based engagement system.

I chatted with Diane Drubay, founder of WAC Lab and We Are Museums, about changes happening regarding the perception of NFTs, Tezos utilization, and more with cultural institutions.

She shared some really interesting comments, especially about how museums are approaching NFTs from the standpoint of tokens and how they can utilize them.

Museums use tokens to distribute part of an artwork and engage differently with audiences on-site. They’re working on expanding the visitor variance. For instance, The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico collaborates with Gisela Colón. Visitors on-site will be able to collect one part of a large video artwork produced for the occasion by the artist.

So, it’s a bit like sharing ownership with the audience and inviting them to bring back something — not just a memory but part of the artwork.

We have another similar project, the Museo de Arte Popular José Hernández, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They are working with an artist, Helio Santos, who will represent the body of work of a famous illustrator in Argentina. He will revisit the new version of these works, which will be turned into generative art and offered to visitors on-site. If you remember what f(x)hash did on the Tezos screens in Art Basel, this will be similar. Visitors will be able to collect one edition of this work.

So, it’s pretty interesting to see that museums are supporting a generative artist from today and allowing them to revisit the body of work from a well-known illustrator. It’s not about NFTs; it’s more about tokens and how we can use these mechanics to distribute part of an artwork or invite visitors to interact.

There’s also an exciting dynamic involving token-based memberships being explored. Basically, many projects are trying to see how they can create new types of communities, shared governance, and even operational processes with different types of audiences.

Final Thoughts

Seeing the continued level of cultural institutions’ adoption of blockchain technology is fantastic. Even more interesting is how they’ve begun approaching it, such as token mechanics about distribution and on-site live minting experiences. WAC Lab continues to provide an excellent resource for art professionals and cultural institutions to enter the blockchain world and embrace technologies like the Tezos network. I can’t wait to see the next season of projects arising out of WAC Lab using Tezos!

The latest improvement in the Tezos Ecosystem DAO that you might have missed!

Aside from the recent “Trustless Business” update for Homebase, it has been a while since we discussed the Tezos Ecosystem DAO. However, rest assured that at Tezos Commons, we’ve been diligently working to incorporate community feedback and implement enhancements to make this initiative the best it can be.

In this article, I want to highlight a significant improvement to the Tezos Ecosystem DAO, which I believe has gone unnoticed by many. This new feature brings a new level of efficiency, transparency, and community involvement to how projects can be funded by the DAO. But let’s start from the beginning!

Tezos Ecosystem DAO — The first iteration

The initial iteration of the Tezos ecosystem DAO began as a proof of concept to provide an alternative source of funding within the Tezos ecosystem. It was governed by five key holders: Tezos Commons, Trilitech, Tezos Domains Foundation, Tezos Foundation, and Tezos India Foundation. Decisions were made based on community input from the Tezos Agora forum, with all opinions being considered equally, without any weighted influence.

Despite being in its early stages, the Tezos Ecosystem DAO successfully funded four different projects out of more than fifteen proposals, distributing a total of 14,750 tez (with another 5,000 pending deliverables). This achievement marked a promising start. However, we recognize the potential for improvement, and community feedback has been crucial in shaping the future of the Tezos Ecosystem DAO.

The New tez-Based Voting System

To enhance inclusivity and transparency in the funding process, the Tezos Ecosystem DAO has implemented a new tez-based voting system. This allows community members to vote on project proposals using their tez, giving them direct influence over the future of the Tezos ecosystem.

Rather than simply expressing opinions on Tezos Agora about whether a proposal should be funded, members can now cast “yes” or “no” votes through off-chain polls. The weight of each vote is proportional to the amount of tez held by the voter. Proposals that achieve a supermajority will then be executed by the key holders.

This system ensures that the Tezos community has a more direct say in funding decisions and that those decisions are made by those who have a vested interest in the success of the Tezos ecosystem. By enabling this new voting system, the DAO not only empowers the community but also encourages broader participation in the governance of the Tezos Ecosystem DAO.

As we have emphasized from the beginning, the Tezos Ecosystem DAO is a community-driven initiative that will continue to evolve based on your feedback. This is not the final version, and we will keep working on improvements until the DAO becomes a self-sustainable and fully decentralized project. The introduction of tez-based voting is a significant step in the right direction.

However, for this system to function effectively, your participation is crucial. Voting is based on a supermajority, so low participation could result in suboptimal proposals being funded. Don’t let this happen — cast your votes and help shape the future of the Tezos ecosystem.

May 2024 was a big month for product releases and new developments introduced to the Tezos ecosystem. These releases and updates include the Kukai iOS beta, tzBTC 2.0, Etherlink mainnet beta, Paris B protocol updates, and more.

Let's break it all down.

Ecosystem Insights

Kukai iOS Beta Release

The most exciting thing for me that was rolled out this month was the Kukai iOS beta. If you've been involved in the Tezos ecosystem, then more than likely you’ve used Kukai web wallet. The unique Direct-Auth feature makes logging into your wallet via a social handle/email a breeze.

Imagine bringing the same seamless experience of the Kukai wallet to the palm of your hand via mobile phone. Thanks to the impressive work done by Kukai mobile dev Simon McLoughlin, that possibility is now! Users can now participate in the Kukai iOS beta via Testflight.

Some of the new features brought by the mobile iOS version include the following:

Automatic token discovery via TzKT, with the ability to hide, favorite, and reorder tokens.

You can view your collectibles in grouped or ungrouped modes. Items inside each group are ordered by the latest received, allowing you to view what's been obtained quickly.

Collection viewing mode.

A media player that supports images, GIFs, videos, and audio. It also includes attributes, floor price, and last sale price pulled from OBJKT.

A brand new discover section to see a curated list of dApps in the Tezos ecosystem and key partner projects such as Manchester United.

Native integration of Wallet Connect v2.

Easier access to all your accounts via switching paired wallet addresses.

Social login support and the introduction of the ability to sign in with your Apple ID.

Tez onramps within the app.

Ghostnet integration, allowing teams an easier means to test their apps.

Token pricing charts and a brand-new delegation rewards view are available.

The most noteworthy change, in my opinion, is the introduction of Apple ID as a sign-in option.

The “Discover” section is also neat, showing NFTs, DeFi, Games, Art, Collectibles, and more tabs. The very top of the page also features a feed of ecosystem partners and major platforms. That said, many other new features are still to be announced. If you use an Iphone, visit Testflight and give Kukai mobile via iOS a try, and be sure to provide feedback as well!

tzBTC 2.0 Is Here!

If you've been following Roman Schnider on Twitter/X, then you’ve probably seen that he has been posting updates on tzBTC 2.0. Fast forward to the present; we've been greeted with the mainnet beta release of tzBTC 2.0!

tzBTC is a tokenized version of bitcoin on the Tezos blockchain, allowing bitcoin to be used within the Tezos DeFi ecosystem. Keyholders manage tzBTC by minting and burning tokens, while gatekeepers handle the conversion between bitcoin and tzBTC, requiring KYC and AML checks.

The bridge mechanism utilizes technology from Acurast, which involves multi-signature wallets and decentralized verification processes. You can learn more about Acurast or read one of our publications featuring them.

What's New?

tzBTC 2.0 introduces several key improvements over the original version:

Gatekeeper optimization: Automated, self-service minting and burning with no fees except gas fees. This makes the process faster and more accessible.

Keyholder automation: Leverages the Acurast execution environment to automate tzBTC's previous time-consuming process. It effectively automates minting and burning so that tzBTC will be instantly available to gatekeepers.

Cost-effectiveness: Subsidized by the Tezos Foundation, eliminating minting and burning fees.

Multi-chain capability: Future support is intended for minting tzBTC on other blockchains, enhancing accessibility and usage.

Paris B Protocol Update

With the Paris B upgrade a few days away from activation (at the time of writing), Inference AG discovered a few critical issues after a security audit.

The Paris B protocol had three critical issues. These include incorrect reward computation for overstaked bakers, faulty unstake requests after staking operations, and a mismatch in ticks limits for Smart Rollups' WASM PVM affecting refutation game performance.

These issues do not threaten network security but required immediate fixes. Paris B2, included in Octez v20.0, addresses these issues and will be activated on June 4th. Nodes running Octez v20.0 will automatically implement these fixes.

If you're a baker, install the latest version of Octez to enable a smooth transition towards the new protocol!

The Objkt Paint '98 competition invites artists and digital enthusiasts to create pixel art using Objkt's MS Paint-inspired tool. Developed by Baking Bad, 3Route is a cross-DEX on-chain aggregator for Tezos. The Tezos Foundation's announcement explains more about 3Route and the grant.

OBJKT presents Matter & Data

OBJKT announces the Matter & Data exhibition at Digital Art Mile during Art Basel, featuring 17 artists exploring digital and physical art forms. Paris B Implementation Nears: Critical Updates

As we wrap up Consensus 2024, it's time to look ahead to another crucial event for the Tezos ecosystem. The Paris B upgrade is set to be implemented in just 4 days, marking a significant milestone for Tezos. However, recent developments have highlighted the need for immediate action to ensure a smooth activation.

Nomadic Labs has announced the discovery and resolution of three potentially critical issues in Paris B. While these issues do not threaten network security or liveness, they are serious enough to warrant immediate attention. To address these, Nomadic Labs highly recommends that all bakers and node operators upgrade to Octez v20.0, which includes fixes for Paris B.

What You Need to Know About Paris B

Here are the key features included in the Paris B upgrade:

Reduced Block Times: Faster transactions to enhance network performance.

Data Availability Layer (DAL): Improvements to throughput and scalability, benefiting Smart Rollups.

Adaptive Issuance and Staking: Refinements to the economic mechanisms ensuring long-term sustainability and security.

Adaptive Slashing: A nuanced approach to penalizing protocol violations, aligned with severity and intent.

Details of the Issues and Fixes

First Issue: Concerns the computation of rewards when a baker is overstaked. Thanks to Inference for raising this issue and collaborating throughout the process.

Second Issue: Triggered when staking after changing bakers, causing the failure of subsequent unstake requests.

Third Issue: Affects Smart Rollups' WASM PVM, significantly increasing the computational cost of refutation games (Layer 2 fraud proofs), though they remain feasible.

Paris B 2 is included in Octez v20.0 as a user-activated protocol-override. This means that nodes running v20.0 (and higher) will automatically activate the Paris B 2 patch instead of Paris B on June 4th, before block #5,726,209.

Etherlink at DeFi Catalyst Accelerator: A Promising Start

Next up, let's talk about Etherlink's recent update on their participation in the DeFi Catalyst Accelerator (DCA) in Singapore. Etherlink has posted an exciting video showcasing the first two weeks of the accelerator program. You can watch the video here.

The DCA is a DeFi-focused accelerator program designed to support startups building on Etherlink and Tezos. The program kicks off with a 2-week in-person bootcamp in Singapore, followed by 4 weeks of remote support. Here’s a closer look at what this program entails:

Highlights of the DeFi Catalyst Accelerator

Mentorship & Guidance: Participants receive targeted support from the Core DeFi team of the Tezos ecosystem and experienced mentors in the space. This guidance helps startups validate ideas, focus their time and resources, complement their teams, and eventually raise money from a network of VC partners.

$200k Funding: Startups have the potential to receive an investment of $200k to support their journey while they raise their seed round.

Expert Sessions: The program includes DeFi-specific working sessions on UI/UX, product development, core engineering, liquidity, security, and legal matters, conducted by experts in their respective fields.

Network Turbocharged: Multiple in-person networking opportunities are hosted for the benefit of the cohort, including an evening with leading Asia-based Web3 investors and meetups with the Web3 community in Singapore.

Program Structure

Week 1-2 (Singapore): Participants meet mentors, the cohort, and the local ecosystem, collaborating intensively with mentors on various aspects of their projects. They also engage with the Web3 VC and builder community in Singapore, validating their ideas and starting the budgeting process.

Week 3-6 (Remote): The program continues with mentorship and lectures focused on building in crypto and growing their products. Startups begin working on early MVP designs for both the UI and backend of their applications or services.

End of Week 6: The program culminates with an Investor Committee presentation, where startups present their products to leading VCs and experts for potential investment.

Sectors of Focus

The DCA aims to bring on-chain projects with a financial angle to the community. This includes but is not limited to, sectors like user-friendly Web 2.5 DeFi platforms, crypto neobanks, digital asset management platforms, automated strategy vaults, sports betting, real-world assets (RWA), and innovative trading marketplaces.

Etherlink's involvement in the DeFi Catalyst Accelerator is a testament to the vibrant and supportive ecosystem within Tezos. The progress made during these initial weeks is promising, and we look forward to seeing the innovative projects that emerge from this program.

Tezos’ Data-Availability Layer: Enhancing Smart Rollups Throughput

In the latest update from Nomadic Labs, the Paris 1 protocol introduces the Data Availability Layer (DAL) on Tezos Mainnet, significantly boosting throughput and data bandwidth for Tezos Smart Rollups, especially Etherlink. This enhancement is a major step forward in improving network efficiency and scalability. To participate in the DAL, community members and bakers are encouraged to review the latest post detailing hardware specifications and requirements.

Attesters: Ensure the availability of the published data.

TezBake (BakeBuddy) Update: Octez 20.0 Support Released

In preparation for the Paris protocol activation on June 4th, TezBake (also known as BakeBuddy) has released an important update with Octez 20.0 support. This update is mandatory for all bakers to ensure compatibility with the upcoming protocol changes.

Mandatory Update: Octez 20.0 is required to support the Paris protocol, activating on June 4th.

Upgrade Command:

To update your baker using TezBake, run:

tezbake upgrade -a

To verify the version after the upgrade, run:

tezbake version --all

Upgrade Methods:

If you don't have the latest TezBake (v0.15.1-beta) or are still using bb-cli, it's highly recommended to use the "C" upgrade method.

A closer look at the integration of OpenPad with Tezos and its commitment to build on Etherlink.

With Etherlink now reaching its mainnet beta stage, more than 15 different partners have been announced as Etherlink gears up for its public launch.

In this article, we’ll explore one of the many partners focused on decentralized crowdfunding via their launchpad, OpenPad. OpenPad has committed to building and deploying on Etherlink and its Tezos integration.

OpenPad Integration With Tezos

OpenPad is a decentralized launchpad that uses AI to help new projects in the web3 space get funding and development support. It can be thought of as an online hub where creative ideas are turned into real-world projects through tools like token sales and NFTs combined with the added support of an in-house incubator.

Users of the platform can access an in-depth investor portal, which features a wide array of features, such as wallet management, market tracking tools, token offering and launch schedules, social engagement tools, AI recommendations, and more.

When you visit the OpenPad site, you’ll be prompted to connect your wallet to access all the features. It may take some refreshing, but eventually, Beacon should show up as installed, and you can select your Tezos wallet from the available options.

Following this, you’ll then be able to launch the app and gain access to upcoming token sales, the KYC (Know Your Customer) process, an application for applying to obtain an IDO (Initial DEX Offering), and much more. It’s worth noting that OpenPad requires all project owners and investors to go through the KYC process. So, if you plan on participating in any upcoming sales, you must follow and utilize it.

In addition to integrating Tezos, OpenPad has extended an even greater show of commitment by being one of the first builders on Etherlink with its announcement of deploying on the network. As an early partner, OpenPad will help enable and offer new projects building on Etherlink important funding avenues and support.

Let’s highlight Etherlink more in the next section.

What is Etherlink?

For those who may be unaware of Etherlink, it’s worth understanding what is is and does. It is arguably one of the most important upcoming product launch in the Tezos ecosystem.

Etherlink is an EVM-compatible layer 2 smart rollup technology on Tezos. Designed to be extremely fast, with speeds as fast as 500 milliseconds, nearly 0 fees, and only 15 seconds for data to get posted back to the base layer. Etherlink offers a fast, cheap, and decentralized solution for a wide range of blockchain applications and uses, with all of it being powered by Tezos.

When we speak of smart rollups, especially regarding enshrinement, let’s expand on what we mean by that. Tezos smart rollups are commonly referred to as being “enshrined” as they are part of the L1 (layer 1) consensus, inheriting the Tezos base layer security properties. This added layer of enshrinement thus enhances operational trust since bakers need to corroborate proofs posted back to the Tezos base layer.

These rollups offer both horizontal and vertical scalability by offloading computation and submitting only results and their validity proofs to the Tezos network, thus increasing transaction throughput. They also mitigate censorship and reduce maximal extractable value (MEV) risks by avoiding centralized sequencers.

For users and developers, enshrined smart rollups ensure seamless interaction and compatibility with multiple programming languages, creating a consistent user experience. They also facilitate smoother communication and asset transfers across rollups and back to the Tezos network. Unlike other layer 2 rollups on other chains who are normally subsidized by their main chain like on eth, Etherlink users get treated as first class citizens, just like those who are using the Tezos blockchain.

Final Thoughts

The addition of Tezos support on OpenPad marks another new and important funding route for upcoming projects on Tezos. With over $11.2M in funds raised via the platform and more than 7,500 registered KYC users, this integration marks a great step towards allowing new Tezos projects to receive funding and assistance via their incubator program.

Equally exciting is the commitment to building on Etherlink and providing funding for new projects. I’m very excited to see new projects utilize the platform to create value for the Tezos ecosystem!

I cannot stress enough the importance of physical Tezos meetups and events. At Tezos Commons, we are dedicated to continuously sponsoring and supporting those who wish to organize such gatherings in their local areas we love seeing more and more Tezos enthusiasts starting such initiatives.

One such exciting event is just around the corner: on June 1st, the amazing folks at TezTones will host their first-ever physical event at the NFT Museum in Seattle, and I’m sure it’s going to be a blast! I’ve often highlighted the benefits of such events, but in this article, I thought it might be better for you to hear it directly from someone deeply involved in the coordination and organization of TezCon. So, let’s meet HashBrown!

Q&A With HashBrown

Q: Let’s start with an introduction of yourself and the team, who are the people behind TezCon?

I’m Ari Sandoval but most people know me as Hashbrown, I am an artist and founder of Teztones and one of the main organizers behind the upcoming TezCon event.

TezCon is a collaborative event put together by TezTones, Teia.Cafe, TunaKuna, and a coalition of artists and projects.

Q: How did the idea for TezCon come about?

It initially started as a really simple idea for TezTones to get together because one of our members (NFTterror) was flying out from Ireland… We realized that we could take that opportunity to gather as many of us in person to meet and celebrate all the work we put into our 1st TezTones Season and the friendships we have made. Then TunaKuna made the extremely generous offer to rent out the Seattle NFT Museum and everything got kicked into high gear.

We realized that with such a big space and 27 screens available we could make the event much larger in scope and celebrate many of the amazing artists, projects, and communities that make Tezos such a vibrant blockchain for the arts.

Q: In your opinion, what are the benefits of such IRL Tezos events?

I think in a world that is largely digital and screen based (the world in general these days, but especially blockchain) just the act of meeting the humans behind the avatars is profoundly powerful. By coming together to share food, art, and live music we can build much deeper bonds and memories than solely through online interactions. There are no rugging or connection problems IRL!!

Also, probably the main goal of this event at the end of the day is to have fun; to embrace the fact that we have the power to bring ourselves together to celebrate our accomplishments and hard work.

Q: What challenges have you faced in organizing TezCon, and how have you overcome them?

I think the main challenge was that it started as a small idea that rapidly grew in scope in a very organic way. In doing so we wanted to make the event open to as many as possible, and then that again introduced more organizational complexity. However although we had to go through those growing pains they were also the blessings that made everything possible and I think will make the event such a success!

Q: What can attendees expect from their experience at TezCon?

People can expect 27 screens featuring curations of some absolutely amazing audio and visual art from across the Tezos blockchain. We need to do a final count but I believe we have easily above 300 artists in total who’s art will be shown!

There will be a short panel about building communities and projects on Tezos with speakers to be announced soon as well as a gallery tour in the museum with artists in attendance going over their art and creative process.

We will also have live musical performances including a featured set by Yoeshi Labs, as well as a jam session featuring Yoeshi Labs, Fendel, Ryan, and myself.

Q: How have sponsors contributed to making TezCon a reality?

Harnessing the power of blockchain technology, generative AI, and immersive experiences, ten cultural institutions announce their upcoming projects engaging new audiences, preserving cultural heritage, and exploring new avenues for fundraising.

Museums today face numerous challenges, including engaging younger, tech-savvy audiences, securing funding, and staying relevant in a rapidly digitizing world. Mainnet Beta Phase

The launch will begin with a mainnet beta phase, which limits the number of BTC/tzBTC in the automated setup to minimize risks. During this phase, keyholders will need to manually top up above the set limits if necessary. This cautious approach ensures a secure and stable transition as the service rolls out.

KYC and Participation

Participation in tzBTC 2.0 requires KYC (Know Your Customer) verification. LEXR Finance and Sumsub will guide users through this process. Everyone has heard the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” This is pretty easy to understand, as simply by opening a book you reveal an entire story inside. This simple concept is something to remember when consuming art as well. Artists do not create for the sake of fame or wealth. If they do, you perhaps won’t find much context behind the imagery. In its place, you will find “hype.” Of course, it is completely understandable to have preferences, but with the art world evolving so rapidly, it is beneficial to read the messages behind the art, because a picture, particularly one curated by an artist, is truly worth thousands of words.

Don’t Tell Me How to Consume Art!

I would never do such a thing! I wouldn’t want to rob someone of their own experience with any art form. However, I do hope that my lifelong love for art can offer some insight to help others see the nuances that may otherwise go unnoticed. Especially on a blockchain like Tezos, where so much exploration and innovation happens, often resulting in art forms that challenge our preferences. Particularly in marketplaces like OBJKT, TEIA, and akaSwap, where there are no gatekeepers, and artists are free to share their most controversial and extreme creations. When one discovers the affordability and accessibility of using Tezos applications, it becomes easier to see why so many artists are in the Tezos Community.

Loving More Things Puts More Love in Our Lives

There are many takes on why we are here in this human experience, but one constant truth since the beginning of humanity is that we long to express ourselves through the things we create. Another truth is that we can only begin to love the things that we allow ourselves to understand. I used to think I hated any art that had skulls in it. It wasn’t until my mid-30s that I recognized I had not taken the time to understand why skulls were often part of various art forms. I decided to talk with fellow artists about what inspired their “dark art,” and it began to resonate more with me. What I used to dismiss on my timeline was, in fact, a missed opportunity to know and appreciate a very important aspect of creation: death. Now I can further appreciate both the artists and their art for its meaning, without letting the skulls put up that silly wall.

Embracing AI Art

The art market is currently being flooded with more content than ever. It can understandably be overwhelming; however, it is a missed opportunity to become discouraged and vocally against all AI art. When an artist wants to manifest something they are feeling, it should be seen as a beautiful thing, especially with more tools at their disposal. If an artist takes the time to learn a new tool, puts their heart into creating, and makes you feel something, the method of creation shouldn’t matter. This is why AI art should be analyzed with the same openness as any other art form.

Don’t let fear and lack of understanding keep you from exploring and seeking inspiration from this rapidly evolving art revolution. As a personal example, I have always put myself into what I create; however, with AI assistance, I feel empowered with more ways to tell my story. As a musician, I have more time to focus on the music and the ability to produce entire music videos myself. These accomplishments were only possible for signed and well-funded mainstream artists before AI. Instead of costing millions and taking months of production, I can offer my listeners more frequent opportunities to know me with fewer physical barriers and improved production quality. Just like any other past innovation, there are flaws, but if it can make it easier for people to express themselves, perhaps we should try to understand.

A closer look at Mintycode’s recent addition of Tezos support.

You might remember the ETH London hackathon, which took place from October 27th to 29th at the end of 2023. Tezos was represented as a gold sponsor through TriliTech, and several projects competed for prizes. Of all those projects, Mintycode emerged as the “Best DeFi” application winner.

Now, fast-forward to the present. Mintycode has continued to support Tezos and expanded its scope to offer bounties through its platform for Tezos and Etherlink. Let’s explore Mintycode and how you can get started using it today.

What Is Mintycode?

Mintycode is a marketplace for open-source contributors, creators, and users. As a bounty platform for software developers, Mintycode allows ideas and projects to be created, discussed, and monitored amongst other contributors. It also offers financial incentives such as grants, bounties, or paid support requests.

For instance, say you want to contribute to Etherlink. You would first search on the homepage by project name. After searching “Etherlink,” you will come across several options. Pinpointing a specific area, you can submit a support request, propose a new feature, create a grant request, and see if any bounties are present.

Per Mintycode’s integration and support of Tezos, the added support is geared to enhance further developer activity on Tezos via the platform. Developers can now submit paid support or feature requests on the platform, and the Tezos community can monitor and support those activities in real-time.

It’s worth noting that Etherlink was running a bounty program on Mintycode, which concluded two months ago during the ETH Oxford hackathon. In the next section, we will show how you can get started using Mintycode.

How Can I Get Started?

To get started using Mintycode, you’ll need to create an account and follow all the steps on the landing page. Alternatively, you can use a GitHub account instead.

Once you’ve started those steps, you’ll be asked to link some additional accounts, such as your GitHub account (if you have not already used them), Stripe, Ethereum wallet, Tezos wallet, and KYC details. You don’t need to fill in all these details immediately, but bear in mind most of these will be necessary, especially regarding receiving payments.

After you’ve completed all those steps, you can start using the platform! Navigate over to the search function and explore different open-source projects. You can also view popular projects such as Etherlink by scrolling below. For example’s sake however, you can search “Tezos” and find several open-source repositories.

By clicking on a repository, you’ll be prompted several actions such as requesting support, proposing a new feature, or applying for a grant as indicated above. These are just the main methods for funding, there will also occasionally be bounties already available. For instance, we already mentioned some from Etherlink that closed a few months ago.

Outside of pursuing these funding avenues, you can also collaborate with other users and even track progress of requests in real-time via the platform! Head over to the site and get started making your first request today!

Tezos Community Rewards — April 2024

Greetings Tezos Community,

We are pleased to announce the winners of the Community Rewards Program (CRP) for April 2024!

For more details about the various categories, please refer to the rewards page on the Tezos Commons website.

The Community Rewards Program is a Tezos Commons Foundation initiative to foster adoption and support the Tezos ecosystem. Up to 5,000 tez are rewarded every month to those who stand out in merit and act in the interest of the Tezos ecosystem.

The nomination form has been drastically streamlined to make it easier for community members to nominate their favorite contributors to the ecosystem. Now containing only three questions, submitting a nomination takes less than 30 seconds.

Don’t have 30 seconds? You can tag any discord message, Reddit post, or tweet with #TezosCRP; we will collect them!

This is the fifth iteration of the program, and we will continue to make changes based on community feedback. Just like the Tezos blockchain, we will be continually evolving this program.

Numerous factors are used when evaluating submissions, such as quality of submissions, quality of activity, number of submissions, and verifiable proof of activity done by the nominee (no single factor is determinative of a winner, as all aspects were weighed to select winners). The judges would like to note that for each category, they are looking for the respective monthly related activity, meaning submissions should reflect activities done for that current month, i.e., activities for February.

Their decentralized nature promotes transparency and accountability, while real-time tracking allows for monitoring and verification of obligations. Tezos’ unique self-amendment feature ensures adaptability and longevity, making it a robust platform for collaborative endeavors. But How Do You Use a Smart Contract?

You don’t need to be a coding expert. Thanks to platforms like objkt.com and teia.art, leading NFT marketplaces powered by Tezos, the process is simplified into an easy-to-fill-out template. When publishing an artwork, known as “minting”, each collaborator is credited within the contract. Each artist provides their wallet address, and these are inputted along with revenue splits once the collaboration is listed for sale. Once this “mint template” is completed, it’s as simple as clicking the “mint” button, and approving the transaction. Creators automatically receive their share upon sales on both primary and secondary markets.

This powerful combination of technology and community has been instrumental in my artistic growth, reducing costs, expanding my talent pool, and reaching a global audience. An exemplary project demonstrating these benefits is TezTones, recently featured in an article by Cryptonio. TezTones, built around Tezos Blockchain and community, brought artists together to create collaborative artworks based on common themes, culminating in live-streamed competitions in a metaverse setting. This innovative approach exemplifies the potential of Collaboration 2.0.

You can also witness this evolved form of collaboration in the curation of art on Tezos. Platforms like OBJKT.com enable curators to support artists beyond simply collecting, via OBJKT Galleries, incentivizing the promotion of the art through further royalty shares, and creating memorable digital experiences that enrich the underground art scene. These collaborative efforts demonstrate the power of collective creativity and innovation in shaping the future of art. To Compare and Contrast:

I spent about 15 years as the front-man for various bands, performing at live shows weekly and organizing every aspect of productions myself. We never had managers, booking agents, or investors. The stark differences in that experience compared to my last 4 years focused on making art digitally made it clear to me that my time is better utilized within the global communities online.

With the Tezos community, advanced technology, and user-friendly interfaces, the ability to realize creative ideas with the help of other talent is accessible to all. Combining these tools with a robust social media presence has been the most effective method of content creation I’ve experienced in over two decades. Exploring the history of #objkt4objkt as a community event, turnout from the third iteration, and spotlighting a few artists who participated.

One of the many unique facets of the Tezos community expands into its uniqueness towards blockchain art. Ever since the introduction of hicetnunc (H=N), we’ve seen an experiment turn into a community of passionate art appreciators for the sake of art.

Tracing its roots back to the first-ever #objkt4objkt event in 2021 on H=N, the third iteration of the community event brought the Tezos art community together and helped artists become more discovered across OBJKT and social platforms.

As we explore the history of #objkt4objkt as a community event and the impressive turnout from the third iteration, let’s also take a moment to appreciate the diverse range of artists who have made this event so special by highlighting a few.

What Is #objkt4objkt?

The first #objkt4objkt event, held from March 26 to 28, 2021, was a collaboration between DiverseNftArt and H=N. During this event, artists were invited to mint their NFTs, referred to as OBJKTs, at no cost on the now-defunct H=N platform.

The purpose was to encourage artists to exchange their NFTs with others, fostering a more diverse digital art collection. Ameliemaia and Tais Koshino, the founders of DiverseNftArt, launched the organization in March 2021.

Following this, in 2022 we saw the event change to #tezos4tezos from May 6th — May 8th. Edition sizes were capped to 100, with prices ranged from 0.1–1 tez in order to rally as much support for artists as possible.

The concept of #objkt4objkt drew inspiration from zine festivals, where artists exchange their works without monetary transactions. These festivals promote community building and personal connections among artists. Participants could freely explore and enhance their art collections by eliminating the financial aspect.

In particular, this concept of discoverability has been the main driver behind #objkt4objkt. To understand why this is the case, I contacted Kika Nicolela, curator at OBJKT, who provided thoughts around how the events have continued to garner discoverability for artists.

#objkt4objkt is a way to energize and get the community more active. That’s one aspect of it. The other aspect of these events, mainly, but all of the events actually, is discoverability. We tend to collect from the artists we know and then from the artists that those artists know. And so even if we are researching a lot and trying to expand our, you know, when we are collecting, we try to broaden the artists we know. And if you want to discover other artists, it’s always hard to get out of the circles and the active artists on Twitter.

But many artists don’t have followers, don’t know how to talk on Twitter, or don’t even have a Twitter account. Or it’s not active at all and has brilliant work. And how do we find those people? And so with an event, you know, if everybody’s using the hashtag of the event and you see all the pieces with the hashtag on the page of NFTBiker or on OBJKT because you can search by tag, then you see all types of people. And you are exposed to, I mean, to artists sometimes that you don’t know.

You just see the art, and you go like, this is beautiful. I want to get to know these artists. What happened to me a lot in this event was discovering artists I did not know much about because I know a lot of the artists, but also because of my job as a creator. So I all the time, but I did discover maybe five. Or six artists that I didn’t know; I had no idea they existed. And I went after the other pieces that they had as well. You know, not only the OBJKTs for OBJKT, but I went to see what they have minted before. And then you discover this whole body of work, which is fantastic.

And that often, if I don’t know, it means that it’s somebody who is very shy on Twitter and hasn’t sold much at all. And so it was a pleasure to collect and to also talk to other people about those artists and see more collectors discovering them as well and being excited about, yeah, this, because, you know, sometimes people complain that collectors don’t like to always collect from the same people, but they love to discover. Sometimes, it’s hard, you know, to find. Well, there’s no sort of set tool.

The third iteration had a great turnout. According to data provided by NFTBiker, over 900 artists participated, and 41,000 editions were sold on primary and secondary markets. Talk about quite the participation from a simple hashtag!

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the diverse range of artists who have made this event memorable by highlighting a few below.

Darkestdollx (Dollx)

Dollx is an NFT artist on Tezos. This particular piece, “Take Me To Hell,” was a special edition of just nine made exclusively for #objkt4objkt. Curious about what motivates one to create such a piece, I reached out to chat with her and explore some of her motivation behind it.

I created this work previously but hadn’t minted it for the collection I made it for. The collection is sold out, so I made this drop as a special edition for #objkt4objkt. Nine editions for .09 tez, so whoever saw them first got a great deal! I was onboarded to Tezos by Jburn during one of his random Twitter spaces, where he would sit and chat with whoever about web3. One of the other guys in the chat even sent me some Tezos to start. I was sold immediately on such a welcoming community. ❤

I feel this is the case for a lot of Tezos artists. It’s amazing to hear more stories like these, how something as simple as a Twitter space can onboard a new artist.

Empress Trash

Empress Trash is a popular NFT artist on Tezos. This particular piece is titled “Much Too Revealing”. Having seen a few of her works floating around in the Tezos art community on Twitter, I was curious to learn more about her as an artist. What I discovered was there’s a unique layer to her work, one deeply rooted from personal experiences.

My works are a series about going through the stages of grief and how deep in despair there is almost another world of divinity that comes with emotions. My mom committed suicide about five years ago, and I’m just coming to the end of mourning her loss, which was difficult because she abused me horribly as a child, and she was one of my biggest monsters, but I also love her still dearly. This series is about it all, like existentialism and a lot of horrible feelings of it all, while finding myself connecting with things much bigger than myself because of the pain and confusion.

Her Tezos story is unique as well.

I’ve been around causing trouble since 2021. I’m the one who asked the hen exploiter a dumb question in an AMA that led to #objkt4objkt being started and declaring #teztrash every solstice for all trash artists or trash adjacent artists to create trash art. Specifically, I call it on the solstices because then it goes over Christmas too, and it helps me, and others who have rough family lives to kinda get through the holidays while just having fun and making art with no rules. I still mint regularly on Tezos while I’m very much a cross-chain maxi, and my work has been in all the fancy places like Sotheby’s, Super Rare, and all over the world.

Even more unique, she rewards her Tezos supporters with a “Full Moon token.” Essentially, for the past two years, she has airdropped Tezos art to holders of this token. The mechanics of the token can be explored further here.

Violet Bond

Violet Bond is another popular NFT artist on Tezos. This piece minted for #objkt4objkt is titled “Life in the long grass.”. If you’ve been involved in the Tezos community or are remotely associated with the NFT community, you’ve probably seen some of Violet’s works on Twitter. Curious about what motivated her unique style, I decided to reach out to her.

Most of my work asks people to examine their connection (or lack thereof) to the wild. The works also contain elements of colonialism, environmentalism, and activism. I have several interviews listed here that cover this in more detail.

Speaking on one of her pieces highlighted at STELLAR in NYC earlier this month, she shared a few words about her “Spider in the Web” artwork.

The primary motivation for the piece that went to NYC was marking a seasonal moment — talking about the dry season in outback Australia and seeing whole galaxies in the small things. This piece is about Australian Orb Spiders, who create huge webs and sit like queens over their domain. I love how the fog sits on their webs; it makes them look like huge constellations.

As we can see, events like #objkt4objkt are important in aiding the discoverability of many talented artists on Tezos. After experiencing yet another fantastic turnout this year, we’re reminded once more of the power of the Tezos art community and how events like #objkt4objkt help bring them closer together. I can’t wait to see the turnout next year and look forward to collecting more pieces myself!

April 2024 was a big month, jam-packed with new developments introduced to the Tezos ecosystem. These developments include Magic’s expanded Tezos scope, amazing artistic exhibitions such as STELLAR in NYC, and the current Tezos protocol upgrade undergoing voting, Paris B.

Let’s break it all down.

Ecosystem Insights

Magic x Tezos

This month, one of the cooler news bites dealt with password-less authentication services such as Magic and their expanded Tezos scope. In case you aren’t aware, there’s been some work with Magic and Tezos for some time now. Similar to solutions like Kukai’s Direct Auth feature, which allows Tezos users to log in to their Tezos wallet via social media logins or email, this integration focuses on Tezos developers and DApp teams. In fact, you may have noticed it within the DNS.xyz platform, which was just recently launched.

By leveraging Magic, developers can easily integrate Tezos into their DApps without manually managing cryptographic keys. This is achieved through the use of Magic’s SDK, which simplifies the process of connecting applications to the Tezos blockchain. The integration allows for functions like sending transactions and interacting with smart contracts on the Tezos network, enhancing user experiences by making them seamless and more secure.

The cool thing about this integration is that it makes Tezos one of five “featured chains”. While Magic technically supports numerous chains, this vote of confidence is incredibly enlightening as this relationship has only grown positively over the years. STELLAR

The STELLAR event, hosted by Victoria West on April 2nd, 2024, at LUME Studios in NYC, illuminated the vibrant Tezos art community. This event marked the second year in a row that Victoria orchestrated a world-class art exhibition in New York City, emphasizing the creative capabilities of Tezos artists. With over 500 attendees, including artists and enthusiasts, the event showcased an array of digital art minted on Tezos from over 60 artists like Vendingnfts, OMGiDRAWEDit, and Wondermundo, highlighting the diversity and talent within the Tezos community.

The exhibition was not just a digital art display; it also featured an engaging panel discussion with key figures from the Tezos community, live performances, and a unique interactive element where even venue staff engaged with the technology, exemplifying the event’s wide-reaching impact. Victoria West observed the diverse participation during the event, noting how individuals from various backgrounds were getting onboarded to Tezos, such as security staff for the venue.

Live performances added another dimension to the STELLAR event, with notable performances by artists like Andressa Furletti and Graphite Method, a collaboration involving actors Laurence Fuller and Vincent D’Onofrio. Graphite Method’s performance intertwined poetry with visual projections, enhancing the overall immersive experience of the event, while Andressa treated attendees with a live performance of her work dubbed “Washed Dreams”. This performance and others highlighted the fusion of traditional artistic mediums with new technologies, showcasing the evolving narrative of art in the digital age.

It’s safe to say the STELLAR event was a success. The event’s host, Victoria West, undoubtedly surpassed her event from last year with another remarkable showing. We at Tezos Commons are proud to support this event, are in awe of how talented the Tezos artistic community is, and cannot wait to see the collaborations born out of this event!

Paris B Protocol Upgrade

With the Paris B upgrade in the cooldown period (at the time of writing), it remains vital to keep participating and making your voice heard on Tezos Agora and in the community.

From a technical lens, this is an essential upgrade for the Tezos network. Collectively, these features include the following:

10-second block times

Activation of Data Availability Layer (DAL) on mainnet

Refinements to Tezos’ Proof of Stake (PoS), such as shortening consensus rights delay

Adaptive issuance

Staking

Adaptive slashing

It’s worth noting that half of these features were available in the Paris A proposal, with Paris B introducing PoS refinements such as adaptive issuance, staker roles, and adaptive slashing in addition to those proposed in Paris A. With that in mind, this is a pretty significant upgrade.

I won’t touch on the technicalities of the PoS refinements as I don’t feel comfortable expanding on something presently fluid. However, the most notable features are 10-second block times and the activation of the DAL to the mainnet.

Shorter block times are self-describing; it takes less time for a block to be created and added to the Tezos blockchain. In the present case, this is currently 15 seconds, thanks to the activation of the Mumbai upgrade. With this upgrade, we’re seeing a reduction to 10 seconds and a time to finality of 20 seconds, 10 seconds less than the present state of 30 seconds.

Neat!

To avoid being left out of the spotlight, the DAL will activate on the Tezos mainnet following a successful voting process. It is a companion network to the core Tezos protocol that provides additional data bandwidth for Smart Rollups. The DAL operates through a network of nodes distributing data across a P2P (peer-to-peer) network. Bakers confirm the data’s availability.

Once this verification is complete, the DAL nodes make the data accessible to Smart Rollups. Smart Rollups are then required to utilize or store the data quickly, as it is only available on the DAL for a limited period. Overall, this is a major upgrade. Make sure you start gearing up for the next round of voting!

Community Rewards Program

dOrg’s Andrei Taranu explains Homebase’s new “Trustless Business” feature and tez-based voting for Tezos Ecosystem DAO governance.

When it comes to building out a robust and functional blockchain ecosystem, governance matters. The ability to implement transparent, verifiable, and smooth voting processes isn’t just a feature of blockchain technology, it’s a fundamental principle baked into this powerful technology’s very DNA.

Here in the Tezos ecosystem, the teams at Tezos Commons and Web 3.0 development collective dOrg have been hard at work for quite some time on Homebase — a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) creator and explorer built to make DAOs more accessible and seamless.

In its ongoing quest to streamline DAO functionality and empower businesses to transact efficiently on-chain, the Homebase team is rolling out a couple of interesting new features: A “Trustless Business” platform with built-in escrow and dispute resolution, and a tez-based voting option for off-chain DAO polls. Tez-based voting is initially aimed at more directly involving the wider Tezos community in the voting process for Tezos Ecosystem DAO proposals, though any DAO on Homebase will have access to the feature.

To understand exactly what these new features will look like in practice (and why they are important), I reached out to Andrei Taranu, decentralized product manager at dOrg, and one of the driving forces behind bringing these features to life.

What is “Trustless Business”?

“Trustless Business is an on-chain substrate for economic arrangements with built-in dispute resolution. It enables individuals and organizations to engage with each other without needing a traditional contract, while still retaining the low-risk profile that’s typically provided by jurisdictions with a functioning justice system.”

What problems with on-chain/off-chain transactions will this feature solve for businesses?

“It’s essentially a template for making a contract between a producer and a consumer of goods or services, with a built-in mechanism that allows a designated third party to adjudicate disputes and decide how to allocate funds locked in escrow. One key differentiator is its permissionless character: At no point does this platform require the participants to provide their natural and/or legal identity. The smart contracts are describing an architecture of incentives which is self-sufficient, meaning that it can operate without any off-chain resources. Fairness is an emergent property of this logical architecture, resulting from having the arbiters financially motivated to maintain an agreeable public history of rulings for themselves.”

How do you envision this feature being implemented by businesses moving forward?

“All current business arrangements involve a contract. Trustless business is simply an alternative way to create/enforce those contracts. It claims to provide a viable replacement for the mechanisms that traditionally ensure fairness. At this point, we’re putting out a minimally viable product, and while we’re confident in its viability from the game theory simulations that we’ve conducted, we recognize the stark contrast between the extensive recourse actions available in traditional justice systems — like multi-level appeals, precedents, and trial motions — and our barebones solution. We had to strip down the economic agreement into the most basic unit of measurement, which we call a deliverable so that we could keep disputes neat and focused. From an administrative perspective, businesses might find such a modular framework quite strange and unfamiliar. At the same time, we expect that the value proposition that is permissionless economic activity will resonate far and wide, attracting a diverse range of users, because it is touching upon pain points in three verticals: freelancer marketplaces, escrow services, and project crowdfunding. Since we’re on the topic of future developments, it’s worth mentioning that a platform like Trustless Business is not only agnostic to the identity of its individual users but also to their nature — whether they are human or not. While within our standard economic environment automations are likely to face mounting pressures and regulatory constraints, our platform can be a safe operating space for humans and machines alike.”

When will Trustless Business be rolled out?

“It will be officially rolled out in June or July of this year, but the landing page is already up. People can already go there and put in their wallet addresses to register. When Trustless Business goes live, it will be on Etherlink.”

On to tez-based voting. What were the reasons behind implementing tez-based voting for the Tezos Ecosystem DAO?

“Tezos is a fundamentally crowd-sourced ecosystem, so our view was that taking this approach goes to the very core of the technology. People believed in this tech enough to buy the token, therefore they should have input into which grant proposals should be awarded funding from the pool of funds they helped raise. Tez-based voting empowers people who hold tez to vote based on their personal stake in the ecosystem represented by the tez they hold.”

What will tez-based voting look like in practice?

“Tez-based voting in the Tezos Ecosystem DAO will look like any other Tezos voting process, with the only differentiator being that individual votes are weighted according to how much tez you hold — as opposed to a unique governance token.”

As he always has, Andrei Taranu remains steadfast in his belief that the DAO model represents not just a vastly more efficient method for governance, contracts, and dispute resolution, but also an extremely important use case for Tezos and other blockchain technologies. Blockchain’s fundamental structure, transparency, and immutability, he believes, make it an ideal framework for democratizing real-world processes and organizations, something he spoke about during his recent appearance on TezTalks Radio…

“If you compare on-chain DAOs to any other kind of governance method, this comes out on top. If you compare it with just yelling “yay” or “nay” in a room or stamping paper ballots or even electronic voting which is centralized on servers, this is much more secure and transparent. With a blockchain-based DAO, everybody can trust that the decisions of the voters will be reflected in the actual outcomes.”

Add to this the technology’s baked-in ability to evolve and adjust based on input from voters within the ecosystem, and you’ve got a recipe for a highly efficient, entirely decentralized, and transparent decision-making framework — all complete with a level of transparency notably absent from the traditional frameworks which preceded it…

“The advantage of having it be a fully digital system is the fact that you can endow it with upgradability from the get-go. Just as the Homebase contract can be amended, the same is true of Trustless Business contracts, where the community — which is accounted for by the earnings, spending, and holdings that they have on this platform — can make proposals to change various functionalities and pipelines. This enables things to change very rapidly.”

With these new features in place, the team at Homebase has helped the Tezos ecosystem take an impressive step forward in the quest to show the world what on-chain governance has to offer. And, as these features make their way into the public consciousness, it will be fascinating to watch their impact — not only here in the Tezos ecosystem, but across the rapidly evolving world of business and commerce.

Tezos Grants Roundup | April 2024

The Tezos blockchain’s strength lies in its community of builders and projects that continuously push limits and add value, and it’s a core tenet of the Tezos Foundation’s mission to support this community.

The Tezos Foundation grant program aims to offer support to the most promising projects across a variety of areas, from gaming and DeFi to arts and culture.

April 2024 grantees

Here are the grantees that have been announced throughout the month of April:

Sugar Gaming, Sugarverse

Sugar Gaming is a Bulgarian game studio founded in 2022 by the founders of XS Software. With a pool of more than 60 million gamers from previous projects, Sugar Gaming aims to transition them into Web3 gaming. This will be done through email marketing campaigns and in-app notifications for all games developed by XS Software.

They are creating Sugarverse, a five-game saga. The first is Sugar Match, a Web3 PVP Match-3 mobile game inspired by the successful puzzle game Match Masters. Players can trade Sugarbear NFTs within the game to obtain abilities that match their gameplay preferences, enhancing their likelihood of success in player-versus-player (PVP) matches.

MetaPals

MetaPals is a virtual pet game similar to Tamagotchi Pets, played as an extension on the Google Chrome browser. It offers a growing list of iconic characters, including Teletubbies and Hello Kitty, that can be interacted with as unique NFTs across different devices. Users care for their digital characters as they grow, learn, and behave like real-life pets. These pets evolve uniquely for each user and act as their sidekick to liven up daily web interactions.

Star Symphony, Sekai Studio

Star Symphony is a rhythm game developed by Sekai Studio. It was built on Tezos in collaboration with Guitar Hero and the CEO of Team Secret. The game has a vast network of over 20k registered players, a monthly active user base of 4k, and over 100 tracks created by the community.

Leveraging the creator economy, Star Symphony gives musicians and artists a platform to list their music as NFTs in the game. Players can then mint these NFTs, and the creators can earn up to 90% in royalties.

Pandora, Functori

Functori secured a grant for their project, Pandora. Its main objective is to provide a secure, scalable, and cost-effective solution for certifying data on the Tezos blockchain.

Ledger Launches Updated Tezos Wallet App: Version 3.0.3

Quick Start Guide for Adaptive Issuance

Tezos has a fixed issuance model where bakers get fixed rewards for each block they bake or attest. A consequence of this model is a yearly inflation rate of approximately 4.6%. The inflation rate is not sustainable for our blockchain. It doesn’t compare well to other chains. Furthermore, coins used in smart contracts and smart rollups may suffer from deflation as they cannot be delegated.

The latest Tezos protocol proposal ParisB includes a new issuance model. It introduces Adaptive Issuance (AI) alongside the current fixed model. One of its aims is to reduce the inflation rate on the chain.

Adaptive Issuance will activate 5 cycles after the ParisB protocol activates. At the time of writing, Adaptive Issuance is active on the Parisnet test network. If ParisB passes the governance process, it will activate on mainnet in June 2024.

In ParisB the current fixed issuance reward model will continue alongside Adaptive Issuance. Delegators can stake their coins and the protocol will handle the reward payment.

In this short article, we describe the steps most Tezos bakers and users will need to use the new model. You can work with the examples below on Parisnet today. We do not attempt to cover the full details of Adaptive Issuance or the rewards model here — this is a Quick Start guide.

Bakers

Users of Tezos can delegate their wallets to a baker. Today, public bakers provide a service where delegators receive rewards from the baker. These rewards have to be managed by hand or with additional software. The baker freezes a security deposit of 10% of the total balance of the baker plus that of its delegates.

In Adaptive Issuance, the key changes for bakers are:

The baker can stake any size of bond from their spendable balance. This stake replaces the security bond of the previous issuance model.

The minimum stake is 600tz.

Delegators to the baker can also stake, but the baker needs to be set up to allow its delegators to become stakers.

The baker can accept up to 5 times its own stake from stakers (the multiplier is called the limit of staking over baking).

The baker can set the staker fee it receives (called the edge of baking over staking). It defaults to 100%.

The stakers receive their proportion of the baking reward due to their stake directly from the protocol.

The stake is subject to slashing if the baker misbehaves (e.g. double baking).

The stake needs to be unstaked and finalized to withdraw the baker from operation.

It is up to the baker if they continue to pay out delegation rewards. These still have to be handled manually.

A baker still needs 6000tz (1 roll) to participate in baking.

Baking rights are allocated based on stake rather than the full baking balance. Old delegations still influence the baking rights but 1tz delegated has half the rights of 1tz staked. Accordingly, the rewards due for delegation are smaller than that for staking. The new reward model is outside the scope of this article.

The slashing model to punish malicious baking activity has changed in ParisB. A full in-depth description of Adaptive Slashing is in the Paris announcement.

Setting Up a New Baker

If your baker was active before the AI activation, the current security deposit has been automatically staked. This is usually 10% of the sum of your baker’s balance and your delegators’ balances.

If you are setting up a baker after the AI activation, you will need to self-delegate and stake a bond yourself. For example, here we set up a key to bake with a stake of 600tz (the minimum).

octez-client register key my_baker as delegate octez-client stake 600 for my_baker

It is no longer enough to just register your key. You must stake as well. It now takes 2 cycles before your baker receives baking rights. You can stake the entire value of your spendable balance if you want, but you should leave some balance free for staking, unstaking, and finalization fees.

Changing Your Stake

You can change the size of the stake at any time, but the change will take 2 cycles to take effect. The change will affect your baking rights. You can stake any amount from your spendable balance. Here we raise the stake by an additional 700tz:

octez-client stake 700 for my_baker

To reduce the stake, use the unstake command. Here we reduce the stake by 300tz:

octez-client unstake 300 for my_baker

This only removes the funds from staking. After 2 cycles they no longer contribute to baking rights calculations, but they are still frozen. To unfreeze them and return them to the spendable balance, you must wait 4 cycles and issue the finalization command:

octez-client finalize unstake for my_baker

If you unstake too many coins and your stake is below 600tz, you will lose all baking rights after 2 cycles.

Allowing Others To Stake On Your Baker

Anyone can delegate their Tezos coins to your baker. But by default, other users are not allowed to stake on your baker. You can allow them by setting the delegate parameters. Here is the prototype command:

octez-client set delegate parameters for my_baker \ --limit-of-staking-over-baking 5 \ --edge-of-baking-over-staking 1

The limit of staking over baking is the multiplier of the allowed stake on your baker. The number can be between 0 and 5. The default value is 0, i.e. no allowed stakers. The allowed stake is this number multiplied by your baker’s stake. Anything staked over the limit is considered as a normal delegation.

The edge of baking over staking is a number between 0 and 1 representing a percentage. This percentage is the proportion of the baking or attesting reward that the baker receives. The rest of the reward goes directly to the staker. The default value is 1, i.e. all of the baking reward goes to the baker.

For example, to allow 3 times your stake and take a 15% commission use the following command:

octez-client set delegate parameters for my_baker \ --limit-of-staking-over-baking 3 \ --edge-of-baking-over-staking 0.15

Remote Signers

The staking operation and changing the delegate parameters are management operations. Many bakers protect their keys with a remote signer and a hardware security module. You will need to do slightly more work when setting up staking if you use them.

If you use a Ledger device, use the Ledger’s Tezos Wallet app whilst issuing the staking commands.

If you use a remote signer, it will need to be reconfigured to allow the staking commands to pass. For octez-signer you will need to allow operations with magic byte 0x03. During normal operations, you will probably not want to allow these. For Signatory please refer to the user guide.

Decommissioning a Baker

To decommission your baker properly, you will need to unstake your entire bond first. During a period of 4 cycles, the baker still has some baking rights and the funds are still frozen. After this period has expired, you can finalize the operation. To unstake your entire bond, issue the following command:

octez-client unstake everything for my_baker

Once the 4 cycle period is up, you can return your stake to your spendable balance by issuing the following:

octez-client finalize unstake for my_baker

Then you can turn off your baker processes.

Users or Delegators

We will use the Octez command-line wallet octez-client in this section. By the time that ParisB is accepted and goes live, other wallets will support Adaptive Issuance.

The key differences for users of Tezos:

The general Tezos user can still delegate their coins to a baker and be a delegator.

Additionally, they can stake their coins and become a staker if the baker accepts staking.

You can stake any amount in your spendable balance, but you should reserve some funds for staking, unstaking and finalization fees.

You can stake more or unstake at any time, but changes take 2 cycles to affect baking rights and hence any rewards.

Unstaked funds are still frozen. The unstaking needs to be finalized after 4 cycles.

The user’s wallet receives any baking rewards due to the staking directly from the Tezos protocol. The baker is not involved in this process. The rewards are automatically staked.

The user’s stake is subject to slashing should the baker misbehave.

You can liquidate your stake by unstaking everything, waiting 4 cycles, and then by issuing the finalization command.

If the baker you have delegated your coins to does not accept staking, you will need to find another baker who does accept staking.

Staking To a Baker Using Octez-client

The user can stake in the same way that a baker can. They must delegate to the baker first. For example to delegate and then stake 700tz:

octez-client set delegate for my_wallet to my_baker octez-client stake 700 for my_wallet

The stake is immediately locked and contributes to baking rights within 2 cycles.

If you receive an error like this:

“The delegate currently does not accept staking operations from sources other than itself: its `limit_of_staking_over_baking` parameter is set to 0.”

then the baker is not set up to receive staking.

Changing Your Stake

You can change your stake in a similar way to a baker. To increase your stake you use the stake command. To decrease your stake you use the unstake command.

To increase your stake by 500tz, use:

octez-client stake 500 for my_wallet

To decrease your stake by 400tz, use:

octez-client unstake 400 for my_wallet

After a period of 4 cycles, you can finalize the unstaking action and return the funds to a spendable state.

octez-client finalize unstake for my_wallet

Fully Unstaking

To completely unstake your Tezos coins, use the following command:

octez-client unstake everything for my_wallet

After a period of 4 cycles, you can finalize the unstaking action and return the funds to a spendable state. Also you will need to withdraw your delegation.

octez-client finalize unstake for my_wallet octez-client withdraw delegate from my_wallet
