The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is widely expected to hike interest rates by 25 basis points to a new target range of 3.75%–4.00%. The decision will be officially announced at the conclusion of the Fed's two-day meeting on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. ET.
If implemented, this will mark the first rate hike since July 2023, breaking a prolonged holding pattern at 3.50%–3.75% that has been maintained since December 2025.
Why the Fed is Moving Toward a Hike
Monetary policy expectations shifted dramatically following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish address at the Jackson Hole symposium in late August, where he stressed that "price stability is not self-executing". A subsequent flurry of strong economic indicators has cemented the case for tightening:
