Blessed Martyrs of the French Revolution

On 2–3 September 1792, during the French Revolution’s September Massacres, approximately 191 priests, religious, and lay faithful were massacred in Paris prisons, chiefly at the Abbaye, Carmelite, and La Force prisons. Refusing to take the anti-Catholic Civil Constitution of the Clergy oath, they chose fidelity to the Church over their lives. Among them were bishops, diocesan priests, and members of various religious orders. They were beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1926.

31 August – St. Raymond Nonnatus
Priest, Mercedarian & Patron of the Unborn

Born around 1204 in Catalonia, Spain, Raymond was delivered by caesarean section after his mother’s death in childbirth — hence the name “Nonnatus” (not born). He joined the Mercedarian Order, founded to ransom Christian captives from Muslim slavery. He traveled to North Africa, where he himself was imprisoned and tortured for preaching the faith and ransoming prisoners. Upon his return, he was made a cardinal by Pope Gregory IX but died in 1240 before he could reach Rome. He is the patron of expectant mothers, midwives, and the unborn.

Foundress of the Little Sisters of the Poor

Born on 25 October 1792 in Brittany, France, Jeanne Jugan grew up in poverty and worked as a domestic servant. At the age of 47, she took in an elderly, blind, and paralyzed woman, giving the woman her own bed. This act of charity marked the beginning of her lifelong mission to serve the abandoned elderly. She founded the Little Sisters of the Poor, an order dedicated to caring for the aged poor with dignity and love. Despite later being sidelined within her own congregation, she accepted this humiliation with profound humility. She died on 29 August 1879. Canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
