When a typical trader goes through a few losing trades, he falls into a state of feeling hurt, of loss, and of betrayal.
When the next signal appears, he hesitates and delays until he realizes this trade is performing very well, yet he has no position open in the market.
When a trade loses, the typical trader can blame the market, the news, other people's analyses, etc., to minimize the psychological harm.
But when a trade is correct and he still doesn't make money from it, there is no one to blame but himself. Bearing full responsibility, and the letdown of missing out on profit, causes very great psychological harm.
Why is the pain of a losing trade so much gentler than the pain of missing out on profit, just because of a moment's doubt?
The pain of a loss is only losing money, a cause that can be blamed on outside factors, so the ego is protected.
The pain of missing out is losing money (that should have been earned), and having to admit he was wrong, a direct attack on the ego.
At this point, the pain-avoidance mechanism of human nature takes control of his emotions, pushing him to enter the market after the price has moved a long distance.
That may be a trade chasing the price, or one trying to catch the bottom/top, trading against the direction.
If it wins, naturally the credit goes to him and all psychological harm is erased. If it loses, it isn't because of him, it's the market, the news, manipulation, anything outside himself.
In this light, fear of missing out is only the surface. Greed isn't the root cause of FOMO, since traders keep FOMOing even after losing money many times.
The subtle mechanism of avoiding psychological pain is the real force driving typical traders to "FOMO" again and again, trade after trade, in a vicious cycle.
