スケーリングをめぐる議論には2つの立場がありました。小さいブロックを支持する側は、ブロックサイズを増やすことが、フルノードのホスティングが難しくなり、ブロックチェーンの中央集権化や脆弱性につながる可能性があるとして反対しました。一方で大きいブロックを支持する側は、取引手数料の上昇が成長を妨げかねないことを懸念し、より高速な解決策を推し進めました。
一部の支持者にとって、ビットコインキャッシュは、サトシ・ナカモトが提唱したビットコインのピアツーピア電子キャッシュというビジョンの正当な継続だと見なされていました。フォーク当時の全てのビットコイン保有者（ブロック478,558）は、自動的にビットコインキャッシュの保有者となりました。
技術的な観点では、ビットコインキャッシュはビットコインのアルゴリズムに似ています。すなわち、両プロジェクトはいずれも最大供給量21,000,000枚のハードキャップを持ち、またPOW（Proof Of Work：プルーフ・オブ・ワーク）によるコンセンサス枠組みと、取引を検証するノードを使用しています。
2023年時点で、ビットコインキャッシュのブロックサイズは32MBであり、ビットコインのブロックサイズである1MBと比べて大きくなっています。
