Every major DeFi exploit of 2026 exploited the same gap. KelpDAO lost $292 million when a single-verifier bridge configuration let attackers forge a cross-chain message. Drift lost $285 million when a compromised admin key with no timelock let attackers drain funds in twelve minutes. Wasabi fell the same way. THORchain became the laundering rail for billions in stolen funds, then lost $10.8 million of its own.
Different mechanisms. Different scales. But in every case, the protocol had no way to ask the question that authorization infrastructure exists to answer: should this transaction be allowed.
That gap is now the most expensive problem in decentralized finance.
What Authorization Actually Means
Authorization is not the same as validation. Validation answers a narrow question: is this transaction mathematically correct. A valid transaction is one where the signature checks out, the balances exist, the nonce is right.
Authorization asks a different question entirely: should this transaction be allowed.
Traditional finance has spent decades building systems that answer this second question. KYC checks verify identity. AML systems monitor for suspicious patterns. Risk limits prevent positions from exceeding thresholds. Compliance controls ensure transactions conform to regulatory requirements. These aren't bolted-on features. They're foundational infrastructure, baked into every layer of the financial system.
