The latest twist in one of crypto's most-watched legal fights: Justin Sun vs. World Liberty Financial (WLFI). Fresh from the courtroom — a California federal judge just shut down WLFI's bid to push all claims into sealed, private arbitration. Sun's personal claims will stay in open court, visible to the public, while claims tied to his affiliated entities are now up to both sides to sort between court and arbitration. Rewind a bit for context: Sun was actually one of WLFI's earliest big backers, putting in $45M for $WLFI tokens — funding that helped the project reach a $550M total raise. Fast forward, and the two are now locked in litigation. Sun is seeking hundreds of millions in damages, claiming WLFI's team quietly built a "backdoor" into the smart contract capable of freezing, restricting, or burning holders' tokens without notice — and that this exact mechanism was used against his own holdings. He'd already sought a temporary restraining order earlier to block WLFI from destroying or moving the disputed tokens. Beyond the lawsuit itself, Sun's been sounding a broader alarm: he says the same freeze mechanism could theoretically be applied to WLFI's stablecoin, USD1. He's also questioned WLFI's ability to actually pay out if it loses — USD1's $4B reserve is user deposits, which legally can't be tapped to cover a court judgment. Adding fuel to that concern, WLFI reportedly collateralized around 5 billion WLFI tokens (nearly half its treasury) on Dolomite to borrow $75M in stablecoins.
Still, chalk this round up as a win for Sun in a fight the whole space is watching closely. Rooting for him 💪
