Virgin, Abbess & Mystic

Born Ursula Giuliani in 1660 in Mercatello sul Metauro, Italy, she entered the Capuchin Poor Clares at age 17, taking the name Veronica. She received the stigmata and many mystical graces, including the crown of thorns. As abbess, she was a model of obedience, charity, and prayer. She died on 9 July 1727. Canonized by Pope Gregory XVI in 1839.

9 July – St. Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions
Martyrs of China

St. Augustine Zhao Rong was a Chinese soldier who converted to Catholicism while guarding foreign missionaries. He was ordained a priest and, along with many other Chinese Catholics and foreign missionaries, suffered persecution during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. They were tortured and killed for their faith in various parts of China. A total of 120 martyrs (87 Chinese and 33 foreign) from this period and earlier persecutions were canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000.

These heroic Chinese and foreign Christians who gave their lives for Christ in the “Century of Martyrs” — reminding us that the faith knows no borders and that the blood of martyrs continues to be the seed of the Church.

Bishop, Martyr & Apostle of Franconia

Born in Ireland around 640, Kilian, along with companions Colman and Totnan, left for the continent as a missionary. They evangelized in what is now Germany, particularly in Würzburg, where he converted the local duke and many people. Kilian boldly rebuked the duke for his unlawful marriage, leading to his martyrdom by beheading around 689 along with his companions. His shrine in Würzburg became a major pilgrimage site, and he is venerated as the Apostle of Franconia.

An Irish missionary who brought the faith to pagan Germany — showing the power of bold preaching and the ultimate witness of martyrdom for Christ.

Bishop & Confessor

Born around 500 AD in Aquitaine, Felix became Bishop of Nantes in 549. He was known for his holiness, learning, and zealous pastoral care during a time of barbarian invasions and moral decay. He rebuilt churches, promoted clerical discipline, cared for the poor, and worked for peace in the region. His correspondence with St. Gregory of Tours highlights his wisdom and charity. He died on 6 July 583 (feast observed on 7 July).

A holy bishop who guided his flock through turbulent times — showing that faithful leadership, charity, and reform can bring stability and holiness to a troubled diocese.

He promoted frequent Communion, the Forty Hours devotion, and the reform of religious life. Known for his austere life, powerful preaching, and miracles of healing. He died on 5 July 1539 at age 37. Canonized in 1897 by Pope Leo XIII. Patron of physicians and the Barnabite Order.

1271年にアラゴンのイサベルとして生まれる。アラゴン王ペドロ3世の娘。12歳のときにポルトガル王デニスと結婚し、深く信仰に生きる、慈善に富む、そして平和をもたらす模範的な王妃となった。彼女は病院、修道院、貧しい人々のための住まいを創設し、しばしば自ら病人を看病し、施しを配った。夫の嫉妬が家族の争いを引き起こし、息子たちの間で内戦が起こりそうになったとき、彼女は対立する両軍の間に馬で駆け入り、見事に和解へと導いた。デニス王が1325年に亡くなった後、彼女は自ら創設していた托鉢修道会（貧しきクララ修道会）の修道院に隠棲し、大いなる簡素さの中で生きながら、慈悲の業をなお続けた。1336年7月4日没。1625年に教皇ウルバヌス8世によって列聖。ポルトガルの守護者、平和をつくる人、嫉妬の被害者。
