MOSCOW EXCHANGE TO LAUNCH BITCOIN, ETHER, AND USDT TRADING STARTING DECEMBER 1
The Moscow Exchange has officially announced plans to launch regulated trading for Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and Tether (USDT) beginning December 1, establishing the first institutional digital asset marketplace in the Russian Federation. The new trading framework will leverage the existing clearing and technical infrastructure of the traditional domestic stock exchange.
Under the regulatory framework, non-professional retail participants must pass a mandatory qualification assessment and are subject to an annual acquisition ceiling of 300,000 rubles (approximately 3,700 USD) per designated brokerage firm. This structural integration operates under Russia’s national cryptocurrency legislation enacted on September 1, which authorizes supervised asset trading while maintaining an explicit statutory prohibition against using digital currencies as payment settlement for commercial goods and retail services. The Moscow Exchange currently remains under economic sanctions imposed by the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.
Market commentators, including the leadership of cross-border payment platform Exved, have expressed caution regarding early adoption. High projected bid-ask spreads on the regulated order books may constrain retail participation, while commercial entities engaged in cross-border trade already access alternative liquidity venues with more favorable transaction cost profiles across global markets.
