TETHER EXPANDS BITCOIN HOLDINGS TO 150,000 BTC VALUED OVER 11.5 BILLION USD
Speaking at the Plan ₿ Forum in Lugano, Switzerland, Tether Chief Executive Officer Paolo Ardoino revealed that the world's largest stablecoin issuer holds approximately 150,000 Bitcoin (BTC), representing an aggregate market value exceeding 11.5 billion USD. This figure significantly exceeds the reserve metrics disclosed in the company's third-quarter 2026 attestation certified by accounting firm BDO.
According to the official Q3 attestation dated September 30, Tether International reported 8.37 billion USD in Bitcoin backing USDT liabilities, equating to roughly 100,060 BTC based on prevailing spot prices at quarter-end. The delta of approximately 50,000 BTC, valued near 3.8 billion USD, is held separately under the corporate balance sheet of Tether Investments—funded via retained earnings and surplus capital rather than designated reserve collateral. During the third quarter, Bitcoin allocated directly to USDT backing increased modestly by 1,130 BTC, with portfolio valuation expanding by 2.57 billion USD primarily driven by spot market appreciation.
As of late September 2026, Tether’s consolidated reserve assets reached 191.45 billion USD against total liabilities of 183.5 billion USD, lifting net surplus reserves to 7.95 billion USD. US Treasury bills remain the dominant reserve pillar at 132.4 billion USD. Concurrently, Tether initiated a comprehensive financial audit with KPMG in 2026 to enhance disclosure standards, while circulating USDT supply expanded to 178.5 billion USD, securing 60.76% stablecoin market dominance.
