BTCPAY SERVER EXPERIENCES HOT WALLET SECURITY BREACH, URGES IMMEDIATE NODE UPDATES
Open-source Bitcoin payment processor BTCPay Server has issued an urgent security notice requesting server operators to immediately halt operations and disconnect active nodes following multiple unauthorized hot wallet balance extractions.
The core development team instructed operators to execute system shutdown commands and suspend processing pending comprehensive assessment of the breach. Initial forensic disclosures from founder Nicolas Dorier reveal the exploit targeted instances running version 2.4.1 or earlier, where unauthorized actors leveraged compromised administrator credentials to gain server control and execute automated signatures across Internet-connected hot wallets. Developers have requested affected node operators submit system logs to assist forensics while strongly urging all entities to deploy the updated version 2.4.7 release.
BTCPay Server functions as non-custodial open-source software enabling merchants to self-host Bitcoin processing infrastructure without intermediary processors. While removing counterparty risks, local hot wallet configurations that maintain automated signing keys on active servers remain exposed to operating system-level compromises. This vulnerability follows an August 2026 Lightning Network Daemon (LND) credential exploit that required an emergency 2.4.2 maintenance patch. Total diverted Bitcoin metrics and aggregate impacted infrastructure numbers remain under active review.
