Nearly 3/4 of Bitcoin Lightning Network nodes flagged for outdated software remained on affected release lines more than a year after security fixes became available highlighting the gap between blockchain transparency and consistent network maintenance.

A study by Bitcoin Data Labs researcher, Saurabh Kumar, found that 71% of 550 public Lightning Network Daemon (LND) nodes identified during an August 2026 security disclosure were still running affected software lines as of October 13 2026.

The vulnerabilities had been addressed in LND version 0.19.0, released 446 days before the public disclosure.

The findings highlight how on-chain visibility does not guarantee that network infrastructure is consistently updated or secure. Public node announcements allow researchers to monitor software adoption but do not confirm exact versions or whether specific security patches have been installed.

The study found that software distribution platforms such as Umbrel triggered larger upgrade waves than public security disclosures suggesting that packaging and distribution channels play a significant role in maintaining network security.

The research does not establish that every flagged node was exploitable but underscores the challenges of coordinating security updates across a decentralized payment network.
