Zcash co-founder, Sean Bowe, has proposed ending automatic funding for the Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) program arguing its $125 million treasury is already large enough to support developers for years.
Under the draft proposal, ZCG’s 8% share of newly issued ZEC would instead go to the Network Sustainability Mechanism, a reserve designed to support future mining rewards.
The concern is that automatic funding continues regardless of spending needs. ZCG receives about 144 ZEC daily, potentially worth more than $68 million annually, while retaining its existing funds and continuing to award grants.
The proposal would not affect a separate 12% allocation controlled through coinholder voting. It remains a draft and would require a future network upgrade to take effect.
