He said a ceasefire followed by negotiations would itself be an enormous concession after years of killings and suffering, arguing Ukrainians cannot simply be forced to forgive what happened.
He again backed freezing the war along the current lines as the first step toward negotiations.
But his sharpest message was aimed directly at Trump:
“The way Trump talks about me, he needs to adopt that kind of rhetoric about Putin.”
