Standard Chartered just moved from investor to owner: the bank signed definitive agreements to acquire 100% of Zodia Custody.

What changed: back in May, shareholders accepted a non-binding offer. Now it's binding — SC's I H Limited vehicle takes the whole of Zodia Custody UK Limited, parent of regulated custody entities in Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, the UAE and Luxembourg. Closing still needs regulatory approvals; terms weren't disclosed. The custody business folds into Standard Chartered's Securities Services, while the software arm spins out as Zodia Solutions under SC Ventures.

Why it matters: a top-tier global bank just put crypto custody directly inside its regulated banking house — not a pilot, not a venture stake. Institutional custody is quietly becoming bank infrastructure. The caveat: it isn't closed yet — regulators still need to approve, and the software business is spinning out, not joining the bank.

Does that make independent custodians obsolete, or force them to compete harder on trust?
