Real-world asset tokenization gets framed around issuance. The harder problem is secondary market liquidity.
When BlackRock or Franklin Templeton tokenizes a Treasury fund, the issuance part is relatively straightforward — compliance frameworks exist, custodians are familiar with the assets. What does not yet exist at scale is a deep, always-on secondary market where those tokens trade freely across counterparties.
This matters for three reasons.
First, institutional capital will not deploy into an asset it cannot exit. Liquidity is not a nice-to-have — it is the precondition for sizing. A pension fund allocating to tokenized bonds needs to know it can redeem without moving the market.
Second, the settlement layer that wins RWA secondary liquidity captures a compounding flywheel. More RWA tokens trading on a chain drives oracle depth, stablecoin demand, and protocol fee revenue simultaneously. It is not one tailwind — it is four.
Third, 24/7 settlement changes the risk calculus for market makers. Traditional bond desks hedge overnight risk with complex instruments. On-chain settlement compression removes that overnight gap entirely — which should, over time, compress bid-ask spreads and attract more maker competition.
The blockchains best positioned are not necessarily the fastest. They are the ones with the deepest stablecoin liquidity, the most credible finality guarantees, and the most battle-tested smart contract infrastructure.
Issuance is the announcement. Secondary liquidity is the adoption.
