Crypto futures just threw up one of the more interesting divergences of the week. Over the last 24 hours, total futures trading volume jumped 51% to $146B — but open interest barely moved, up just 1.25% to $141B (via CoinDesk).

That gap matters more than it looks. When volume spikes but OI stays flat, it means positions are getting closed and reopened on both sides, not stacked. It's churn, not new money. Real trend continuation usually needs OI to climb alongside volume — when it doesn't, the move tends to be about flushing weak hands rather than starting a fresh one.

Worth watching whether OI starts catching up over the next day or two, or stays pinned while volume fades back down. That's what tells you whether this resolves into an actual trend or just resets positioning for the next leg.

How are you reading a volume/OI gap like this — fading it, or waiting for OI to confirm before taking a side?
