DeFi Runs 24/7. FX Doesn't. That Creates an Oracle Problem.
A lending protocol can assess collateral and trigger liquidations on a Saturday or Sunday, even when traditional FX markets are closed.
With thin weekend liquidity, a questionable quote can distort a reference price. If that value reaches a lending market, risk calculations may no longer reflect reliable market conditions.
DIA's documented GBP/USD reference-feed design tackles this with three safeguards:
• Three 24/7 FX sources: Independent Feeders collect live quotes rather than relying on one source.
• Consensus filtering: The system selects the latest value within a 2/3 agreement window, with less than 0.2% deviation.
• A 24/5 FX Guardian: Updates that breach the configured deviation threshold are blocked from propagating onchain.
This is particularly relevant when fiat-pegged assets are used in DeFi. The blockchain keeps running, but the underlying financial markets don't all share its schedule.
There's an important trade-off: blocking a suspicious update can prevent an abnormal quote from entering the feed, but holding the previous value can leave the oracle stale during a genuine market move.
That is why source diversity, deviation rules and update behaviour all matter.
A robust oracle needs to know not only when to update, but when not to trust a new quote.
