This is a reminder that cold storage is only as trustworthy as the device you use. What concerns me most is that a modified hardware wallet could reportedly pass its Genuine Check if the original secure chip remains intact. That challenges the assumption that one verification step is enough to guarantee device integrity. Still, this doesn’t mean every Ledger is compromised or that keeping crypto on exchanges is safer. For me, the practical lesson is to buy directly from official sources, initialize the device yourself, never trust a pre-written recovery phrase, and test with a small transfer first. If a device is genuinely suspected of being tampered with, simply resetting it may not be enough. Moving funds to a securely generated wallet with a new recovery phrase is the safer precaution. Self-custody means protecting not just your keys, but also the process and hardware used to create them.
