Coinbase said Bitcoin should begin preparing now for quantum computers that could eventually derive private keys from public keys and drain vulnerable wallets. The exchange noted it holds about 5% of all bitcoin for its clients. It recommends flexible post‑quantum signature schemes, staged adoption (e.g., a 1‑of‑2 setup letting funds be spent with either traditional or quantum‑resistant keys), and support for both individual users and institutions using multiparty security. It also says the issue of lost or dormant coins should be handled separately so it does not delay broader protections. Coinbase pointed to proposals like P2MR (BIP‑360) and P2TRv2 that would let Bitcoin’s transaction format accept new signature types without a full redesign, and warned that because Bitcoin’s consensus process can take years, work must start well ahead of any cryptographically relevant quantum computer.
