US September CPI in Focus as Social Security COLA Could Reach 3.5% in 2027

September’s US CPI report will complete the data used to calculate the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), with forecasts pointing to an increase of around 3.5%, up from 2.8% in 2026.

The adjustment could be the largest in three years. July and August CPI-W readings rose 3.4% and 3.5% year-on-year, respectively.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal expect September headline CPI to rise 3.6% year-on-year.

RBC BlueBay strategist Mike Bell said November’s US midterm elections are unlikely to be a major market driver, with AI-related trading, inflation and Federal Reserve policy likely to matter more.

Bell highlighted stabilizing labour-market conditions but warned that rising food and energy costs could increase inflationary pressure, making the CPI report and the Fed’s response key market drivers.
