Last week the SEC quietly approved a set of 3x leveraged products that most people in crypto completely missed.
Too many traders pile into high leverage chasing quick gains, only to watch their positions get destroyed by a single volatile day. These new products could make that pain even worse if you don't know how they actually work.
On October 2, the U.S. SEC gave the green light to Cboe BZX’s rule change, allowing the listing of six 3x leveraged exchange-traded products tied to $BTC, $ETH, gold, silver, crude oil and natural gas. Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas pointed it out, but it flew under the radar for most.
The real issue is how these things are structured. They reset daily, which means in a choppy market the value can bleed even if the underlying asset ends up higher over time. Crypto already swings hard. At 3x, a 10 percent drop in $BTC becomes a 30 percent hit. Hold it for more than a day or two and decay starts eating you alive.
What we can learn from this is that easier access to leverage doesn't mean safer. It usually means more people getting liquidated faster. These aren't meant for holding. They're short-term tools that can wipe out an account if volatility spikes the wrong way.
Where do you think this goes from here?
