Senate Democrats are putting Tether’s USDT under fresh scrutiny.

A new Senate report alleges that USDT has become a key tool in Iran’s sanctions-evasion network, calling it a “financial lifeline” for the regime.

The report says Iran-linked activity processed an estimated $2B in transactions last year.

Tether disputes the broader characterization, pointing to its cooperation with U.S. authorities and saying it has supported nearly $550M in Iran-linked USDT freezes in 2026.

The debate highlights a bigger question for stablecoins:
Are they becoming tools for sanctions evasion or increasingly traceable rails for enforcement?
