🔌 Nvidia Is Now Investing in the Power Plants That Run Its Own Chips

The AI boom has produced some unusual financing arrangements. This one has the world's most valuable chipmaker putting billions into the company that houses and powers its customers' hardware.

What's happening:
Nvidia has agreed to buy another $1.5 billion in shares of SB Energy, a SoftBank-backed data center developer, ahead of SB Energy's upcoming U.S. IPO — bringing Nvidia's total equity commitment to $3 billion. The new shares are non-voting Class N stock, acquired through a private placement and a prepaid forward contract priced at 90% of SB Energy's expected IPO price, giving Nvidia the same financial upside as public investors without any governance influence. SB Energy is targeting a roughly $50 billion valuation and aims to raise $5–7 billion on Nasdaq under the ticker SBE. Its flagship project, the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Ohio, is designed for over 4 gigawatts of AI computing capacity and is leased long-term to OpenAI under terms requiring exclusive use of Nvidia chips. Separately, Nvidia has guaranteed roughly $105 billion in residual value tied to that same Ohio project, and OpenAI itself holds warrants to acquire SB Energy shares at a nominal price.

Why it matters:
This is a clear example of the tightly interlocked financing arrangements that have become common across the AI infrastructure buildout — where the chip supplier, the data center developer, and the AI lab leasing the space are all financially connected to each other through equity, guarantees, and long-term contracts. That structure can accelerate infrastructure development by aligning everyone's incentives, but it also concentrates risk: if any one part of that chain — chip demand, a lease, or an IPO valuation — falters, the interconnections mean the impact doesn't stay contained to just one company.

Something to sit with:
Does this kind of layered, interconnected financing represent smart, coordinated infrastructure investment, or does it raise legitimate questions about how much of the current AI buildout's momentum depends on the same handful of players backing each other? Worth watching how SB Energy's IPO is received once it actually prices
