Key Highlights
Micron shares climbed 4% on Friday to close at $1,015.80, marking a two-day rally approaching 10%.
The company unveiled what it describes as the industry’s first 512GB DDR5 RDIMM, capable of speeds reaching 9,200 MT/s.
Power consumption stands at 16 watts per module, delivering over 60% energy savings compared to four 128GB alternatives.
Intel and AMD are currently validating this technology for upcoming server architectures, with mass production targeted for late 2027.
The company’s fiscal Q4 earnings release is scheduled for Sept. 30, with Goldman Sachs projecting performance above consensus estimates.
Micron (MU) shares finished Friday’s trading session at $1,015.80, representing a 3.92% increase, or approximately 4% when rounded. After-hours trading added another 0.20%, bringing the two-session advance to nearly 10%.
This upward momentum arrives as market participants look ahead to Micron’s fiscal fourth-quarter financial disclosure on Sept. 30. Management will publish results before conducting its conference call at 2:30 p.m. Mountain time.
The semiconductor manufacturer also gave investors fresh insights into its data-center memory strategy this past week. Micron showcased what it claims is the first-ever 512GB DDR5 RDIMM available globally.
Engineered for the latest generation of server infrastructure, this module delivers speeds reaching 9,200 MT/s. A dual-socket server configuration with 24 slots could accommodate up to 12TB of DDR5 DRAM capacity.
Next-Generation Server Memory Raises the Stakes
The 512GB configuration from Micron operates on approximately 16 watts of power. In comparison, achieving equivalent capacity through four 128GB modules would require roughly 44.2 watts.
This translates to power efficiency improvements exceeding 60%. The company further claims the module can achieve up to 1.4 times better performance versus 256GB DDR5 setups in specific analytics applications.
Both Intel and AMD are in the validation phase for this technology, integrating it into forthcoming server platforms. Mass production is slated to commence in the second half of 2027.
This production schedule suggests minimal impact on Micron’s immediate financial performance. Nevertheless, the product launch illustrates the expanding memory requirements being prepared for next-generation AI, analytics and database applications.
Micron has additionally secured extended customer partnerships. The company disclosed in June that 16 strategic partnerships were anticipated to generate $22 billion through cash deposits and associated financial commitments.
These arrangements cover data center, automotive and consumer segments. Micron has also disclosed approximately $100 billion in outstanding performance obligations from executed contracts.
Analyst Expectations Exceed Consensus Ahead of Report
Market focus now shifts to the Sept. 30 financial announcement. Micron’s previous guidance projected approximately $50 billion in fourth-quarter revenue with an 86% gross margin.
Goldman Sachs analyst James Schneider forecasts $51.9 billion in revenue, an 87.3% gross margin and adjusted earnings per share of $32.54. Wall Street consensus projections referenced in the analysis indicate $50.5 billion, 87% and $31.40, respectively.
Schneider anticipates constrained DRAM and NAND supply dynamics will bolster quarterly performance. He also projects Micron will preserve or expand its approximately 20% market share in HBM.
Institutional investor interest has intensified approaching the earnings date. Hedge fund ownership of Micron increased to 184 funds during Q2 from 154 in Q1, based on the provided information.
Short interest registered at 29.7 million units as of Aug. 31, accounting for 2.64% of shares available for public trading. This marked a 1.04% decline from the prior reporting interval.
Micron’s Sept. 30 disclosure will deliver fresh information regarding DRAM pricing trends, HBM demand levels, HBM4 shipment volumes, customer partnerships, capital expenditure plans and supply outlook. The company officially announced that reporting date on Aug. 26.
