Something interesting is happening in the altcoin market....
Around 70% of Binance-listed altcoins are now trading above their 200-day moving average according to analysis cited by CryptoRank. That is the strongest reading since October 2025.
Normally, seeing this many altcoins recover would get traders talking about one thing:
Altseason.
But there’s a problem.
The broader indicators still aren't confirming a full altcoin season.
One widely followed Altcoin Season Index was sitting around 41 on September 20. Its methodology requires a reading of 75 for altseason, based on how many major altcoins have outperformed Bitcoin over the previous 90 days.
So altcoins are recovering against the dollar, but many still aren't beating Bitcoin over a longer period.
That difference is important.
An altcoin can rise 10%, 20% or even more and still underperform Bitcoin if BTC has been stronger over the same period.
This is one reason a market can look very bullish for altcoins without technically becoming an altseason.
There is another positive sign.
TOTAL3, which tracks the crypto market outside Bitcoin and Ethereum, recently moved back above $800 billion for the first time in more than eight months.
That suggests money is returning to the broader altcoin market.
Recent price action supports that idea too. During the September 18 rally, HYPE gained more than 11%, ZEC around 8% and SOL roughly 6%, while Bitcoin was up about 2% at the time reported.
But a few strong performers aren't enough.
A real altseason usually requires broad participation. It isn't just SOL, ZEC or a handful of trending coins pumping. A much larger part of the altcoin market needs to consistently outperform Bitcoin.
And Bitcoin dominance remains a major obstacle.
It was around 59% on September 20, showing that Bitcoin still controls a large share of the total crypto market.
This creates an unusual situation.
Altcoins are getting healthier.
More coins are moving above long-term trend levels.
Altcoin market capitalization is recovering.
Some major altcoins are outperforming BTC over shorter periods.
Yet Bitcoin is still holding enough market strength to prevent the broader data from clearly confirming altseason.
That means we may be looking at a transition phase rather than a confirmed altseason.
If Bitcoin remains stable while its dominance begins falling and more altcoins start outperforming BTC over longer periods, the rotation case would become stronger.
But if Bitcoin dominance stays elevated, the market could continue producing isolated altcoin rallies rather than the broad moves traders normally associate with altseason.
So the 70% number is definitely worth watching.
But it doesn't tell the whole story.
Altcoins are recovering. The next question is whether they can stop simply following Bitcoin — and start consistently outperforming it.
