Rewrote the same paragraph four times on Tuesday before realising the problem was one word in the source rather than my sentence.
The phrase is from Dusk. Without forcing every balance and position and counterparty detail into public view.
The word forcing is doing something specific there.
Because publishing everything was never a decision anyone made deliberately. It was a consequence. Early chains needed every node to verify every transaction and the simplest way to do that was to make everything readable by everyone.
Then fifteen years passed and the consequence became a value. Transparency as a principle rather than as a side effect of how the first designs worked....
Uhm and I think that is the reframing worth sitting with. Total visibility was a technical constraint that got promoted to a philosophy.
Which does not mean transparency is bad. It means the question of what should be visible was never really asked. It was answered by an implementation detail and then defended afterwards.
My caveat is that I am reading intent into a word choice and that is always a bit unfair to the writer.
