I always assumed fixed-rate lending in DeFi was basically a marketing term—protocols just average out variable rates and call it "fixed." Looking closer at @TermMax changed that view a bit.
What's actually happening is an order-book style matching between lenders and borrowers at specific maturities. So the rate isn't smoothed out by an algorithm, it's agreed upon directly, almost like how bonds work. That's a different kind of trust than what I'm used to in DeFi, where most protocols rely on utilization curves that shift under you.
It made me question something I hadn't thought about before: if rates come from actual matching rather than a formula, what happens when there aren't enough counterparties at a given maturity? Does the market just sit illiquid until someone fills it, or does the protocol have a fallback?
