Nobody actually explains what an attestation is. They just throw the word around like everyone already gets it. I didn't, not until I sat down and worked through how Dusk runs its consensus. Turns out it's not that deep.
Every round validators vote. Once enough of them land on the same answer, that's quorum. An attestation is proof this happened. It bundles the winning vote with the signatures collected from two rounds of checking.
There are two flavors Most validators say a block is good that's a success attestation. Most say it's bad, or nothing got proposed, or nobody agreed enough that's a fail attestation. Same idea, opposite result.
Here's the twist. If more votes land than needed, you can end up with more than one valid attestation for the same round.
Dusk handles this by making every new block carry proof of the block before it. That's the block certificate, basically a receipt that says yes, this happened here's who signed off. No boss. No central authority. Just signatures stacked block after block. That's how Dusk keeps itself honest and don't let a word like attestation scare you off
