I was looking at a governance filing for Babylon's native BTC collateral integration, trying to understand what actually makes the liquidation path work. Buried in the technical justification was a reference to a paper called BaBe. Once I opened it, the story felt different from the marketing shorthand.
Bitcoin cannot natively verify a SNARK. That has been the core obstacle to trustless BTC DeFi for years.
An earlier protocol, BitVM2, solved this in theory. But its own research notes that challenging a fraudulent claim on-chain can cost over 14,000 dollars in fees. That only works if fraud never actually gets challenged.
A follow-up design, BitVM3, cut that on-chain cost by moving verification into a garbled circuit run off-chain. It worked, but each circuit is 42 gibibytes. Setup and storage became the new bottleneck.
BaBe is Babylon's answer to that second problem. Per the eprint dated February 2026, it keeps BitVM3's on-chain savings while cutting the storage and setup cost. It is co-developed with UC Berkeley and set to appear at a peer-reviewed security conference later in 2026.
Here is what stuck with me. The liquidation flow that a major lending protocol's governance is currently voting on assumes this cryptography holds up in production the way it holds up on paper.
Counterpoint one: Bitcoin research often ships ahead of formal publication. Waiting for a conference date is not the same as waiting for the mechanism to be sound, and independent security reviews can validate a design before its academic paper is formally presented.
Counterpoint two: the underlying trust assumption is not zero, but it is small. The garbled circuit setup relies on a cut-and-choose method, and researchers examining this design lineage put the failure probability at roughly 2 to the power of negative 40.
