Bitcoin has never verified anything except itself, and that's exactly why timestamping it matters more than most people give it credit for.

Every proof-of-stake chain carries a quiet liability called the long-range attack. Someone with an old validator key can, in theory, rewrite history from far enough back, and the only real defense most chains have is social consensus. Humans agreeing, off-chain, on which version of the truth is correct. That's why Cosmos zones sit on 21-day unbonding periods. Not because the cryptography needs three weeks. Because trust needs time to propagate through people.

Babylon's timestamping protocol replaces that waiting game with math. Consumer chains post block hashes to Babylon, which aggregates checkpoints from many chains and writes them into Bitcoin transactions. Once a checkpoint is buried under enough Bitcoin blocks, rewriting that history would mean rewriting Bitcoin itself. Unbonding periods built for social consensus can shrink from weeks to hours, because the thing enforcing safety is no longer a coordination problem among strangers.

The overlooked part is what this does for young chains specifically. A brand new PoS network with a thin market cap is exactly the chain most vulnerable to a long-range attack, and least able to survive one reputationally. Timestamping gives that chain a security backstop before its own token has any meaningful defensive weight.

Bitcoin isn't securing these chains by being fast. It's securing them by being slow and expensive to rewrite. Worth asking which matters more for a network's survival.
