When first time I started respecting Open Interest, I stopped asking, "Where is price going?" and started asking, "Who is still showing up?" That tiny shift changed how I read TradFi futures.

Open Interest, or OI, is simply the number of futures contracts that are still open. Think of it like counting how many players are still sitting at the poker table. A high OI tells you participation is growing or staying strong. It doesn't automatically mean the market is bullish or bearish. It means the fight is getting bigger. Here's where traders get caught. They see rising OI and assume the trend is safe. Not always. If price is climbing while OI also rises, fresh money is supporting the move. If price stalls but OI keeps expanding, tension is building. Someone will eventually be forced to blink, and those moves can get violent.

I treat high OI like a pressure gauge, not a crystal ball. It tells me how crowded the trade is, not who will win. Context still matters. Trend, volume, and market structure have the final vote. High Open Interest measures commitment, not direction. The strongest edge comes from reading OI together with price instead of letting either one tell the whole story.

The market rewards traders who understand participation before prediction. High OI is worth watching because it reveals where capital is gathering, but patience decides whether that information becomes an edge or just another noisy statistic.
