When I first bought a few dollars of $BTC at $77,451, I felt a rush of excitement and a pinch of fear. The price can swing a few percent in a day, today it's down, 0.31% and the 24-hour range sits between $76,326 and $78,110. That volatility reminds us why security should be the first thing on our checklist, not an afterthought.
Start With a Strong Password
A password is the first line of defense. Use a unique phrase that mixes letters, numbers, and symbols, and avoid anything you've used on social media. Think of it as the lock on a safe that holds $BTC , $ETH at $2,245, and $BNB at $702.68. Even if a hacker knows your email, a strong password keeps the vault closed.
Use a Hardware Wallet for Large Balances
Software wallets are convenient, but a hardware device stores the private key offline. When I moved my SOL holding, now priced at $95.45, to a hardware wallet, I felt a lot more peace of mind. Offline storage means the keys can't be reached by malware that might be lurking on a phone or computer.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Everywhere
Most exchanges and wallet apps let you add a second verification step, usually via an authenticator app. This extra code is like a second lock on the door. Even if someone guesses your password, they still need the temporary code to get in. It's a small habit that stops many attacks in their tracks.
Watch the Fear & Greed Index as a Sentiment Check
The Fear & Greed Index is a quick gauge of market emotion. Today it reads 30, the same as yesterday, indicating fear dominates. When fear is high, some people rush to sell, but it also means scammers may try to exploit nervous investors. Knowing the index helps you stay calm and double-check any urgent requests you receive.
Keep Your Software Updated and Back Up Your Seed Phrase
Every app you use, from wallets to exchange apps, releases updates to patch security holes. I've learned the hard way that ignoring a single update can leave a door open. Also, write down your seed phrase on paper and store it in a safe place. If your device fails, the phrase is the only way to recover AAVE at $132.47 or any other assets.
