Long-Term Conviction Is a Skill, Not a Personality Trait
Everyone says they are a long-term investor — until the drawdown hits 40%.
True conviction is not blind holding. It is a structured answer to one question: has anything changed that invalidates the original thesis?
The framework:
1. Write your thesis before buying. Not the price target — the reason. What must be true for this asset to succeed over 3-5 years?
2. During drawdowns, audit the thesis, not the price.
$BTC losing 30% does not change its fixed supply, institutional custody infrastructure, or ETF-driven demand flows.
$ETH losing 40% does not reverse real-yield, restaking, or EIP-1559 deflation. Price is noise. Thesis drift is signal.
3. Separate volatility from deterioration. Volatility is the price you pay for long-term returns. Deterioration is a broken product, regulatory shutdown, or competitive displacement. Treat them differently.
4. Size for survivability.
$SOL at $12 was a generational opportunity — but only for those who sized positions they could hold through that level of pain. Conviction without survivable sizing is just hope.
5. Set thesis expiry dates. Networks have growth milestones. If adoption metrics miss by Year 3, the thesis is broken — regardless of sunk cost.
Long-term conviction is not patience. It is disciplined, thesis-aware holding with pre-defined invalidation criteria. That distinction is worth more than any entry signal.
