China signals goodwill toward Taiwan, but markets still have reason to stay cautious

🌿 Beijing has announced a new set of easing measures toward Taiwan following the rare visit by KMT chairman Cheng Li-wun, focusing on agricultural and seafood trade, investment, and the possible partial resumption of group tourism. On the surface, this helps cool cross-strait tensions and adds some support to sectors tied to trade and travel flows.

🤝 Even so, the move came alongside Beijing’s renewed emphasis on the 1992 Consensus and deeper communication with the opposition KMT, showing that the agenda is not purely economic. That gives this latest goodwill package a clear political layer and makes it harder to view as a simple de-escalation step.

🛡️ Taiwan has also responded with caution, with President Lai Ching-te stressing that exchanges can expand, but not at the cost of democracy or core national interests. In other words, the door to engagement is not closed, but trust in Beijing’s signals remains limited.

📈 For markets, the short-term effect may show up in sentiment around tourism, agriculture, and companies with exposure to the mainland. But with the scale, product scope, and timing of implementation still unclear, the current reaction is likely driven more by expectations than by anything solid enough to fully trust.
