#ZcashIronwoodUpgradeNearsTestnet 🔐 The update that will restore trust
Zcash will activate Ironwood (NU6.3) on testnet on July 4, the most important update in its history. It was born from a crisis and promises to turn the biggest vulnerability of
$ZEC into its greatest strength.
🕵️♂️ Context: a 4-year bug
On May 29, researcher Taylor Hornby used AI (Claude Opus 4.8) to audit the Orchard pool and found a vulnerability that allowed creating unlimited and undetectable forged ZEC. The bug was present for 4 years, surviving human audits.
Developers patched the bug on June 1, but the privacy architecture prevented cryptographically proving whether it was exploited. ZEC crashed more than 50%, from +$600 to ~$300.
🛠️ Ironwood: the solution
Component Function
New shielded pool Replaces Orchard with formal verification
"Tourniquet" mechanism Prevents more ZEC from leaving than entered
Immediate verifiability Users can add balances to confirm the supply
"The amount of ZEC that anyone can transact is no greater than the amount that should exist" – Sean Bowe.
📅 Schedule
· Testnet: July 4, 2026
· Mainnet: ~July 21, 2026
Shielded Labs warns that some exchanges and wallets may not be ready, but developers will not delay activation.
📊 Impact
· ZEC has already rebounded +45% from the $303 lows to ~$457.
· If Ironwood succeeds, trust could be fully restored.
· A prolonged failure would extend distrust and bearish pressure.
July 4 is the first real test.
