Headline menyebutnya sebagai “kembalinya likuiditas,” dengan pembicaraan tentang bull run baru. Crypto Twitter merayakan, saham meningkat, dan aset berisiko berkedip hijau. Tetapi di balik semua kegembiraan itu, ada lebih banyak yang terjadi.
Ketika Fed mengakhiri QT, itu jarang merupakan pertunjukan kekuatan — biasanya itu adalah tanda peringatan. Secara historis, pasar sebenarnya telah berkinerja lebih baik selama QT, bukan setelahnya. Sejak 2003, rata-rata pengembalian tahunan selama siklus pengetatan adalah sekitar 16,9%, dibandingkan dengan sekitar 10,3% selama periode QE. Itu karena QT biasanya terjadi ketika ekonomi sehat, kredit mengalir, dan Fed merasa percaya diri.
Setelah mereka membalikkan arah, itu adalah cerita yang berbeda. Itu sering berarti mereka melihat masalah di depan. Pikirkan 2008. Pikirkan Maret 2020. Setiap kali Fed telah mengakhiri QT atau memulai kembali QE, itu dilakukan untuk menstabilkan pasar, bukan merayakannya.
Jadi pertanyaan sebenarnya bukanlah apa yang dilakukan Powell — tetapi mengapa dia melakukannya sekarang.
Ada tanda peringatan yang jelas: likuiditas menyusut, bank berada di bawah tekanan, dan pasar obligasi tampak tidak stabil. Fed mungkin sedang turun tangan untuk mencegah sesuatu yang lebih buruk. Ini mungkin bukan awal dari rally — bisa jadi sinyal bahwa masalah sedang dalam perjalanan.
