For ten days $BTC sat in a box. The top was $84,352, set on Oct 12. Last night it finally pushed through, tagged $84,898, and this morning it is back near $82,600. If you bought the breakout, this one hurt. Here is the simple checklist I use to tell a real breakout from a fakeout, using what the Binance BTC/USDT chart actually printed.
What happened (Binance spot BTC/USDT, IST)
- Box since Oct 12: about $79,800 to $84,352
- Oct 21, 17:30 to 21:30: the 4H candle ran from $83,500 to a $84,540 close, the heaviest 4H volume since Oct 15 (~5,400 BTC)
- Oct 21, ~22:00: high of the move, $84,898
- Two 4H closes above the old top: $84,540 and $84,490
- Daily close at 05:30 IST Oct 22: $84,093, back under $84,352
- 05:30 to 09:30 IST: the next 4H candle dropped to $82,671 on ~4,300 BTC, almost as heavy as the breakout candle
- Now (~11:55 IST): about $82,600, down 2.7% from the high and roughly 1.8% below the 05:30 open
Fakeout checklist
1. Did the higher timeframe close agree?
A wick above a level proves nothing. I want the candle on the timeframe that drew the box to close above it. The box here was drawn on daily candles, and the daily closed back inside. That was the first warning, before most of the drop.
2. Did the old ceiling act as a floor?
A real breakout usually comes back to test the old top and holds it. Here, price slipped back through $84,352 without even a pause. A level that can't hold from above wasn't really flipped.
3. Was the selling as strong as the buying?
The breakout candle carried ~5,400 BTC. The candle that undid it carried ~4,300 BTC. When the move back in is nearly as heavy as the move out, buyers didn't win the argument.
4. Did it follow through quickly?
Strong breakouts tend to run while late shorts cover. This one spent about 8 hours stuck between $84,000 and $84,900 and then rolled over. Stalling right above resistance is a tell.
5. Where would I have been wrong?
If you buy a breakout, your invalidation is a close back inside the range, not a random percentage. That rule would have taken you out near $84,000 at the daily close instead of here.
What I'm watching now (not a call)
- Box middle: ~$82,076. Holding above it keeps this a normal range day.
- Box top: $84,352. Only a daily close back above it changes the picture.
- Box floor: ~$79,800, the Oct 15 low.
The lesson I keep relearning: the market doesn't pay you for being first through a level. It pays you for waiting until the close confirms it.
