👀 FLASH LOAN ATTACKS DRAINED $1.211B FROM DEFI, STUDY FINDS
Flash loan attacks caused $1.211 billion in losses across DeFi between February 2020 and July 2024, according to research published in the Journal of Financial Crime.
Researchers identified 72 flash loan attacks among 254 successful DeFi attacks, which caused $6.568 billion in total losses. More than 80% of flash loan losses occurred on Ethereum.
The study identified 14 attack types, with price oracle manipulation, donate-function exploits, reentrancy and one governance attack accounting for more than 81% of losses. Logic-based exploits also became more significant, rising from 28% of flash loan losses in 2020–2022 to 55% from 2022–2024.
