What Is Worldcoin (WLD)? Why Has Sam Altman’s Project Fallen More Than 97%?

Worldcoin ( $WLD ) is a crypto project designed to distinguish real humans from bots and build a global digital identity network. Users can verify they are unique humans through the Orb biometric device.

Sam Altman’s role as a co-founder gave the project major attention. WLD reached an all-time high of $11.74 on March 9, 2024, but trades around $0.30 in 2026, representing a roughly 97% decline.

Now operating as World Network, the project is built around “proof of personhood.” World ID aims to let users prove they are real humans without revealing their identity, using zero-knowledge proofs and biometric verification. World Chain is an Ethereum-based Layer-2 network.

Worldcoin launched on July 24, 2023. Its vision included digital identity, protection against bots and fake accounts, financial access and human-centered blockchain infrastructure.

The Orb is its most controversial technology, using biometric features to verify that a person is real and unique. Although World says cryptographic methods protect raw biometric data, iris scanning has triggered privacy and regulatory concerns. Spain temporarily halted biometric data collection in 2024, while Portugal imposed a similar 90-day suspension.

WLD’s collapse has several causes: high token supply and continuous unlocks, investor and team allocations entering circulation, weaker-than-expected usage, regulatory problems, biometric-data concerns, broader altcoin weakness and fading AI-driven valuation expectations.

Worldcoin was rebranded as World Network/World in October 2024.

Rising AI-generated bots could increase demand for proof-of-personhood technology. However, WLD’s recovery depends on real usage growing fast enough to absorb new supply. Regulation and social acceptance of biometric technology remain major risks.
